American Airlines’ MD-80 Retirement Not Affected By Boeing 737 MAX Grounding

April 26, 2019
https://airlinegeeks.com/2019/04/26/ame ... grounding/
With 115 flights canceled every day through at least Aug. 19,
the airline has lost about 19,780 seats per day as a result of the grounding.

As the Fort Worth-based carrier faces a full summer schedule ahead,
it is also preparing for the exit of the final 28 McDonnell Douglas MD-80 aircraft in its fleet.

In an effort to mitigate lost capacity from the 737 MAX grounding,
many speculated that American Airlines will extend the lifetime of its 140-seat MD-80 aircraft.

The airline, however, confirmed to AirlineGeeks in a statement that the MD-80s will fly until Sept. 2019
as originally scheduled and
that there have been no changes to the aircraft’s usage or retirement as a result of the 737 MAX groundings.

American tentatively plans the last McDonnell Douglas MD-80 revenue flight for September 4

American Airlines is tentatively planning the last McDonnell Douglas MD-80 revenue flight for September 4, 2019.

The special flight, renumbered flight AA 80, is scheduled to operate between Dallas/Fort Worth and Chicago (O’Hare).

American currently operates one DC-9-82 (N501AA) and 27 DC-9-83s. The carrier operated 362 at its peak.

The MD-80 fleet was never repainted in the new livery because of the pending retirement.

On Wednesday 4 September 2019, American Airlines operated its final revenue flight with the McDonnell Douglas MD-80,
also known as the ‘Mad Dog’ or ‘Super 80’.

The airline is retiring the last of its McDonnell Douglas MD-80 fleet
as most of the remaining 26 aircraft take their final flights to Roswell, New Mexico (ROW).

The McDonnell Douglas MD-80, also known as the ‘Super 80’ or ‘Mad Dog’,
was the workhorse of the US airline’s fleet throughout the 1980s and beyond.
