H-21 - German Armed Forces

Post by Mainsail »

Does anyone know if the H-21's operated by the German Armed Forces were simply assembled at the Weserflug GmBH plant in Germany or built there from scratch? I know they were allocated a unique range of c/n's, e.g. WG1-WG31 but were these numbers applied to U.S. manufactured parts or to totally German constructed machines?
A photo of a c/n plate might help!
Thanks,
Colin

Hiya!

I'm also interested in a picture of a c/n plate.

I'm convinced however these frames were built in Philly and shipped to Bremen. One of many references to this is in the book 'Flugzeuge aus Bremen: Luftfahrtgeschichte der Hansestadt' (page 95), which you can watch on google books, and should be the 7th link here:
https://www.google.com/search?q=weser+flugzeugbau+H-21

Please note, it's in German. :-)

Hi Robert,
Many thanks for your prompt and helpful response. I have downloaded that document and will attempt to translate.
I have a query in with an old Vertol contact in the U.S. and will wait to see if he can confirm or deny.

I do have an image of a c/n plate, but it from 54-4001.

Will keep you updated.
Thanks again,
Colin

Hi Robert,
Sorry for the delay in reverting on this but my old Vertol contact came to nothing.
However, I have just obtained a copy of "Klassiker der Luftfahrt 6/07" which states the following (per Google translate), I quote "The [Bundeswehr] V-43 helicopters were built at the Morton plant, PA and then flown to Philadelphia where flight trials took place. There the two haves of the hull were dismantled for shipment to Bremen. From there the overseas crates came to the Weserflug plant on a low loader, where the fuselage front and rear were screwed together again and the rotors assembled."
Seems your theory was correct!
Thanks again for the help.
Regards,
Colin
