Local Scottish media report that Loganair,
Scotland’s national airline,
are to place an order for 20 ATR 42-600s to renew its aging fleet of Saab 340/2000s,
some of which are approaching 31 years of age.

The first of these new ATR aircraft will arrive during the second half of 2019,
according to sources, launching the replacement of the airline’s aging Saab fleet.

The airline’s COO, Maurice Boyle,
commented at a meeting in Shetland that “the existing Saab 2000 and 340s used on Loganair’s routes,
including to and from Shetland, are becoming too costly to run in terms of both operation and maintenance.”

Boyle described that the Saab 2000s could be considered as
“a Porsche when it should be a Ford Focus.”

Currently, the airline operates a fleet of
two Dornier Do-328s, one Embraer ERJ-135, 13 Saab 340s, and 5 Saab 2000s.

Boyle added that the ATR is a quieter airplane, with a bigger cabin, and offers better amenities on board.

Loganair has also been gradually phasing out its fleet of Dornier 328 aircraft.
At its strongest, Loganair’s Dornier 328 fleet consisted of six aircraft.

Loganair lands aeroplane deal with Flybe and Avation
The planes will enter service next month

Loganair is sub-leasing two aircraft from Flybe
as it continues to replace its fleet of Saab planes
with those made by Airbus and Leonardo’s ATR joint venture.

The two 70-seat ATR 72-600 planes, which are owned by London-listed Avation,
will run on Loganair’s routes from Aberdeen and Glasgow to Sumburgh,
and from Edinburgh and Glasgow to Kirkwall.

The planes will enter service next month [march 2020]
and will replace the current 50-seat Saab 2000 models.

Loganair will be able to transfer Covid-19 patients from Shetland to the mainland by the end of this week.

Airline chief executive Jonathan Hinkles posted on LinkedIn that the company had received approval that they would be able to use one of its Saab 340 aircraft as an air ambulance.

Loganair confirmed on Monday that the converted Saab 340 passenger plane “will be available to carry Covid-19 patients from all island groups to the mainland from later this week”.

That will take the strain off of the RAF, which has sent aircraft from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire to Sumburgh twice in the last month to transport coronavirus patients to Aberdeen.

In his LinkedIn post, Mr Hinkles said that a crew of volunteers had been in for final training and a “dress rehearsal” in the converted aircraft last week.

Earlier this month, Loganair announced they had altered one of their twin otter aircraft for the same purpose.

Both the twin otter and Saab 340 will be based at Glasgow Airport but will be available for use across Scotland.
