UH-1 Yankee forced landing near MCAS Miramar

Yesterday afternoon just before the afternoon commute a USMC helicopter declared an emergency and landed their UH-1 just off the beach in an estuary near MCAS Miramar.

It was still there this morning, and I've got some pix of it. However, that early it's really backlit, I might try again with better sun. Marines haven't said how they will get it back to the base.

Call the Army - A Chinook can come and lift it!!!

Well, the Marines have used a Super Stallion to lift Hueys before, so I doubt they will actually call the Army. It will be interesting no matter what they do. Putting it on a truck is not an easy option, because it's 30-40 yards from the nearest pavement, and even then you have to pass under a 12' (3m) railroad embankment, no way a Huey on a truck will fit under that. A few years back a USMC F-18 pilot ejected over housing 2 miles from Miramar and killed 3 people on the ground, so I don't think they will want to fly it over any houses, just in case. They may take it to Pendleton, just to keep the operation over water as much as possible.
