The total estimated program cost is $1.77 billion.

The proposed sale will improve Germany’s capability to meet current and future threats by providing critical capabilities to coalition maritime operations.
Germany currently operates the Lockheed P-3C Orion, but that aircraft is reaching end-of-life and will retire in 2024. :!:

Germany plans to replace it with the P-8A Poseidon.
The proposed sale will allow Germany to modernize and sustain its Maritime Surveillance Aircraft (MSA) capability for the next 30 years. Germany will have no difficulty transitioning its MSA force to P-8 and absorbing these aircraft into its armed forces.

The prime contractor will be The Boeing Company, Seattle, WA. There are no known offset agreements proposed in connection with this potential sale.

This notice of a potential sale is required by law.
The description and dollar value is for the highest estimated quantity and dollar value based on initial requirements.
Actual dollar value will be lower depending on final requirements, budget authority, and signed sales agreement(s),
if and when concluded.

28 September 2021

Berlin has finalised a contract to equip its navy with five Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft,
with deliveries to commence in 2024 under the Foreign Military Sales programme deal.

Germany in June 2021 signed a letter of offer and acceptance
related to the roughly €1.1 billion ($1.3 billion) acquisition,
which will replace its current navy fleet of Lockheed P-3C Orions.

Confirming the order’s completion on 27 September 2021,
the US Department of Defense said work on the Lot 12 production aircraft
should be completed by February 2025.

It detailed the new “fixed-price-incentive-fee” project phase –
placed via the US Naval Air Systems Command – as worth more than $756 million.

Germany will become the third European nation to field the Poseidon,
following the air forces of the UK and Norway.

Germany is acquiring the Poseidon as a stop-gap measure
until the German Navy could find a suitable long-term replacement
for its eight Lockheed Orion maritime patrol aircraft (MPA)
after that platform's modernisation programme
was halted because of cost and technical difficulties.

In securing the requirement,
Boeing fought off competition from Airbus with its C295 Persuader,
and from Rheinland Air Service (RAS) with its RAS-72 Sea Eagle.

The Poseidons will replace the Deutsche Marine fleet of eight Lockheed P-3C Orion aircraft,
whose maintenance cost was considered too high.
Initially destined to operate until 2035,
their retirement was moved forward to 2025.
The acquisition, however, could jeopardize the continuation of the MAWS program that Germany and France initiated in 2018.

With both the French and the German Navy having to retire their Maritime Patrol Aircraft (the PC-3 on the German side, the Atlantique 2 on the French side) around 2035, the two countries have decided to conjointly develop a new aircraft due to enter service by the time its two predecessors would retire.

The acquisition of five P-8 Poseidon aircraft was presented as an “interim solution” by Germany.
In June 2021, Joël Barre, general delegate for armaments,
told the French Parliament that the government was
“reconsidering their position regarding the continuation” of the MAWS program.
Shortly after, Dassault Aviation said it was ready to offer a solution based on the Falcon 10X platform.
