On May 26, 2021, the Belavia flight BRU869 from Minsk (MSQ) to Barcelona (BCN) had to turn back near the Polish border.

The flight was being carried out by the Embraer E195LR, registration EW-400PO,
famous for its special livery celebrating the Belarusian game “World of Tanks.”

The Polish Civil Aviation Agency said the Belavia aircraft was not allowed into the airspace of Poland because France,
lying further along the route, prohibited it from flying, according to RIA Novosti.

The aircraft entered a holding pattern above the city of Brest and Baranovichi
to burn enough fuel for a safe landing,
before turning back towards Minsk where it landed.

Until now, the measure had not been enforced.
In fact, minutes before BRU869 was rejected, another Belavia flight (BRU868) from Amsterdam (AMS) to Minsk
crossed the Polish airspace without any problem.

A Belarusian passenger plane flying from Minsk to Barcelona turned back on Wednesday,
after Poland said it may not be able to enter French airspace.
"This pilot received information from us that the French airspace was blocked ...
and he may have a problem with entering,"
Polish Air Navigation Services Agency spokesman Pawel Lukasiewicz said by telephone.

Belavia declined immediate comment on the flight.
French Junior Minister for Transport Jean-Baptiste Djebbari said on Monday
that France had suspended the authorisation for Belavia flights to cross its territory.

Belavia says it has been banned from flying to
Lithuania, Latvia, France, Sweden, Britain, Finland, the Czech Republic and Ukraine.

Poland currently allows Belavia flights to enter its airspace.

MINSK, 26 May (BelTA) – A Minsk-Barcelona flight of the Belarusian air carrier Belavia had to make a U-turn in flight on 26 May.
Anatoly Glaz, Head of the Information and Digital Diplomacy Office, Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
made a few comments in response to the event, BelTA has learned.

The official said:
“A totally outrageous fact and an immoral deed.
Honestly speaking, it is virtually aerial piracy.

One can certainly shift the blame and cynically distort facts to one's heart content
but in truth the aircraft with passengers took off
and despite the absence of any restrictions in Spain aviation agencies primarily of France closed the air space while the aircraft was flying.

As a result, the aircraft had to fly in circles.
Certainly, no one had given warnings in advance.”

Anatoly Glaz said:
“I am simply stunned by the cold disregard for interests of the passengers and their safety.
What is their guilt?
If an emergency happens, the people who made this decision will be made responsible.”
