Dino, the CF-104 is made at Baden Söllingen. I do not have any further info for the AMI F-104S ASA.

From the very very good book Starfighter Colours (N. Malizia)
The 23o Gruppo CIO, under the command of Wing Commander Paolo Poggi, produced its first "Special Colour" using the example 5-42/MM6704 100th ASA, which had reached the unit from Caselle on 10 April 1990. On that occasion the first 2.000 flying hours of the "Greyhound" unit and the arrival of the aforementioned 100th ASA were celebrated. Anyway the initiative was not to the liking of the Wing Commander who ordered that the aeroplane be immediately stripped of its paint
.

Dick, I sended your photo to a Canadian Friend.

His reply:

It's 104785, but my info is it was painted that way in 1981. Although the CF-104s were all pooled in 1 CAG, they were allocated as needed each day to the squadrons, one of which was 441 Squadron. Their name is "Silver Fox", but they've worn a black and white checkerboard somewhere on their aircraft since their Sabre days and they painted this aircraft in recognition of their CO's 1000th CF-104 flying hour in 1981.

I spent a couple of weeks with 441 Squadron in Cold Lake in 1999 helping them sort through stacks of material they'd accumulated to see if they had enough to start work on a history book and the CO at the time (he's now a Typhoon test pilot with EADS) had a big SUV painted somewhat like '785. He told me he'd dropped hints for weeks before some of the pilots finally did it one weekend while he was away to "surprise" him. He'd been a CF-104 pilot in Europe and knew how things were done back then. They were able to get approval to paint a CF-188 in overall dark and light grey checkerboard, too, but it wasn't as dazzling as the CF-104. Aparently, the black paint they used was hard to remove and they eventually had to strip it to bare metal and repaint it in camouflage and some people up the food chain were Not Amused. :-)

I've just checked some other sources and they agree on the 1981 date.
There was only one painted like that. 441 had another "Checkerbird", 104880 in 1983, but it was quite a different scheme.

Hope this helps,
DJ

DJ,

Thank you very much for your kind help.
The stamp on the Kodachrome slide says that it was developed in September 1979.

Anyway, I know the serial and that is what counts.

Thanks again,
Dick
