No, as Mac. But I doubt that Joost or Marcel know that. 8)

Hm, not really. But I have been driving off-highway at night there many times (on my own, lucky me) and covered considerable distances without much effort, at considerable savings too.

Franky, as you know I nearly always make plans to go back (and carry them out, haha) BUT it really looks like I will not be going this year...

Key, I remember that you arrived a little late at the open house at Naha. And one could see you had a rough night. I will go back this year. Hopefully the weather will be better.

Hi Koen,

Very nice pictures, i realy like the pics from Iruma. From those pics i have a question. Did you photographed the Gulfstream and Chinook from outside the base??

Cheers and thanks for your reply,
Eric

Hi Eric,

both pictures were taken from outside the base, on the eastern end. The road/viewingspot is several metres higher than the taxiway and runway, resulting in some nice topside photos of the planes taxiing by.

You need something like a ladder on that spot. I had to balance on a small tree-stump, which isn't advisable for good photos. The CH-47 is doing its training right next to the runway. The viewingspot is a small terrain used for 'anti-slip courses'. I found this spot good enough for both landing and take-off shots. I think the other end is only suitable for landingshots.

If I'm correct, the best trainstation to stop is Inariyama-Koen (btw this is not a typo, it's named after me   ). This stop is behind the hangars and you pass some preserved planes in a park on your way to the Eastern viewingspot.

To the other visitors of Iruma, feel free to add info.

grtz

For the holders of a recent copy of the Scramble mag: what Koen describes is spot 1 at our Airfield Guide of Iruma.

Post by Motty »

G'day Guys,

I've just returned from my own trip to Japan and Korea during October. Many thanks for the help from people and information here on Scramble too.

Here are a few shots to start with. I began my trip at the spotters heaven that is Nyutabaru.
