Chuck Yeager, the former US test pilot, war hero and first man to break the sound barrier, celebrated his 93rd birthday earlier this year.
But judging from his Twitter account, he has no intention of letting age mellow him.
When one follower noticed he seemed to have a negative attitude towards the British, and asked him why that was the case, Gen Yeager replied:
“Arrogant. Nasty to Americans when we were over there saving them. Nasty when I visited a few years ago - wanted a whole lot for nothing.”
His comments prompted a huge response from his many British admirers, many of them outraged – but Gen Yeager was in no mood to back down:
