Both aircraft have their merits, but saying that the boeing is cheaper with fuel is pure nonsense as it also cannot take as much fuel and therefore you will need more tankers for the job, and so on.

Just hope for the usaf and crews that this refurbished b767 will not be bothered with the delays as with all the other new boeing aircraft.

But it is good news for italy and japan, they can build some more parts for this aircraft.

Strange politics all.

Piet

I do see your point. Life cycle cost for 20-30+ year of operation do fit into the equation. Additional capability requirement, technical merits, mission capability are indeed some of the factors to be counted in. All tanker scoring data during the bidding process allowed each competitor to adjust its price offering on anticipated mission scenarios, fuel burn, and new military construction costs.

And the data breach earlier this year compromises the adjustment to price, and more importantly whether the data breach created an unfair competitive advantage for the bidder that looked into each other proprietary tanker data. The impact of this breach was thoroughly investigated before any final decision was made. It is imperative that this selection was on a completely level playing field. One should think of course but no one knows how much political weight was factored in.

By all means it is the US Taxpayer who will share the brunt of this all.

And honestly who guessed Boeing? I admit i truly thought EADS would win ....

The omens do not bode well for the Boeing 767 tanker.

The Italian ones 5+ years late entering service.

The Japanese ones were also late entering service, but by a lesser amount.

With the 2012 election looming and Obama losing ground in the 2010 mid-term elections,Boeing was always the political favorite.

Boeing's corporate headquarters is in Chicago, the city where Barak Obama cut his political teeth.

Had the EADS bid won,the A330/KC-45 assembaly would have taken place in Alabama,a 'red'-i.e Republican state. So another pointer to Boeing winning.

Politics wins every time.

indeed, guys, all good, solid information, which could be all more true than the official replies.

some years ago, many airlines replaced the B767 with A330s. I could be wrong, but in the selection process, a better fuel consumption of the A330 was one of the major factors.

comparing operation between a330 and b767 with KLM, the airbus had better fuel economics.

Maybe, these enormous winglets on the new and improved b767 do magic...
