This Tupolev Tu-22M-3 Backfire from the Ukrainian Air Force (#57r) eventually did not depart at all, after a deafening noise for the spotters sitting at the Grandstand:

Forget the noise, that wasn't half as bad as the smell!
I flew home that evening and when I got home and opened my backpack in my bedroom, I could swear that a wiff of kerosene fume came out of it.
Many people sat on the grandstand with handkerchiefs covering their noses.

But what a sight it was, that Backfire!

I was probably not as close as you were, but what irritated me the most was that sticker on the intake. I'm glad they stopped doing that at RIAT's.

At least it was a small one. Remember that sticker on the Czech MiG.23ML in 1991? But it shouldn't have been there!

I agree with you your Backfire pic with the hungry-spotters in front of it says a lot....

Damm, I can remember the Backfire.

The smell was terrible and I even saw some people which needed medical attention because of the dirty smell .......
