Pictures look too soft in my opinion. What settings did you use?

@ vmd:
Is this the one before the 200-400 F4 VRII? cause if that is the case, i am really curious about the rest of your gear. This lens supposed to be a high end lens, and one of the best Nikon has in its range right now (at least the VRII does, don't know about the VRI).....
And i don't want to be rude, but i have to agree with Boudewijn.....the pictures are to soft and some even seem to be out of focus. Did you try this lens without the 1.7 TC allready?

Re: SPL 12-12-2010
This is the VRI. Im still figuring out the setting. The light at the time wasn't to good from the east side of the polderbaan. I was little on the edge of most settings with 320/f6,7 400 iso so I agree and no its not rude, they are soft.

Re: SPL 12-12-2010
Hhhmm, okay, like i said, the VRII is a true excellent lens, so i can not imagine that the gap between the VRI and VRII is as big as this. there probably is a lot to gain yet....vmd wrote:This is the VRI. Which body you have behind the lens if i may ask? and what post processing did you do?
What i am surprised about by the way, is your shutterspeed of 320 by F6,7 and ISO 400. considering the light conditions that is pretty slow. or was this a fully manual setting?

Re: SPL 12-12-2010
The VRII and the VRI seems to be quite identical apart from some Nano coatings difference and new VR
the setting where really on the edge..and used shutter programm I went to 200 iso but had there wasnt enough light. Only when they where airborne better light was available. I think whats got to do with it to is the F6.7 problably it will better performe at F8 or F11.
Still the combination eats alot of light.. maybe too much at that moment.
What did you expect for settings regarding to you Wild Weasel?

When i choose ISO 400 in those lighting conditions (for as far as i can i see) with my old Nikon D200 (image quality is good, but the sensor is of the old generation and does not perform well in low lighting conditions and high ISO settings) with my diafragma set to F8 (nikon 80-400 4.5-5.6) i will have shutter speeds of about 1/640 or a litlle bit higher.
By the way, i know the 200-400 VRII performs excellent in any conditions, even with wide open diagfragma, but again, i don't know about the VRI. As far as i know, my 80-400 should perform a lot worse then the 200-400, but when i compare the quality of my lens with yours, i'm sure there's something not right.
Again can i ask you, what kind of body you use? and try some without the 1.7 TC. 400 mm is more then enough....

Re: Schiphol SPL 12-12-2010
I believe the answer is very simple: the AF don't work with the TC17 on the 200-400mm. To have the AF working you need a diafragm of 5.6 or faster according to the compatibility list on the Nikon website. Use the 200-400 without converters, you realy don't need them.

Re: Schiphol SPL 12-12-2010
Hi Peter,
according to Nikons specs the 17 doesnt match, in theory. In practise it does work out fine. Although the 14 generally gives more quality. But then again push the limites Today I did some improvements on my AF fine tuning as well as several other settings. Hopefully have the chance to test next weekend..

Re: SPL 12-12-2010
That is not a major challenge You can get sharp shots with backlit as well.vmd wrote:The light at the time wasn't to good from the east side of the polderbaan.
You should get sharp shots with ISO 200 F/8 as well. Even if there is too much light. If you shoot in A-aperture, the shutter speed will automatically be adjusted if you choose to set F/8 ISO 200! But then, you need to have either a tripod or a very steady hand indeed
