Delivery of final Eurofighter Typhoon for the Italian Air Force
The Aeronautica Militare (AMI, Italian Air Force) is a prominent user of the Eurofighter T/F-2000A Typhoon. In total the air force operates 95 F-2000 Typhoons, consisting of 81 F-2000A single seaters and 14 TF-2000A two seaters.
Already in 2004 the first Eurofighter Typhoons were delivered to the Italian Air Force. Stationed at four air bases, Trapani, Grosseto, Gioia del Colla and Istrana, the Typhoon plays a vital role in the Italian Air Defence system.
The Eurofighter programme is managed by the Eurofighter GmbH consortium, a company based in Munich (Germany) owned by Leonardo (Italy), BAE Systems (United Kingdom) and Airbus Defence & Space for Germany and Spain.
Besides defending Italian skies, the Italian Air Force T/F-2000s also supports NATO and the Baltic Air Policing missions.
Yesterday, 23 October 2020, after taking off from Leonardo’s plant in Caselle (Turin), the final F-2000A was delivered to the Italian Air Force and landed at Istrana Air Base in the north of Italy. The Italian Air Force Chief of Staff, General Alberto Rosso accompanied MM7356 on board two seater TF-2000A MM55129/4-32 to Istrana. The final F-2000A was handed over during a ceremony which was attended by the Chief of Staff of the Italian Air Force, the CEO of Leonardo, Alessandro Profumo and the Aircraft Division Managing Director, Marco Zoff.
Till now, the Italian Air Force lost one Eurofighter. On 24 September 2017, F-2000A MM7278 was lost during an airshow above the sea at Terracina (LT). Unfortunately, the pilot was killed.
Detailed information on the Italian Air Force can be found at the AOB (Air Order of Battle) and military database.
