General

Lagoa Santa houses a Parque Material Aeronautico responsible for maintenance of several aircraft types. Moreover, the airfield has a rich heritage of aircraft manufacturing. Several hundred T-6 for the air force were built here. Currently, aircraft are refurbished for onward sale to neighbouring countries.

Layout

The airfield has a rather basic runway and single taxiway to the factory and maintenance halls. Many of the western halls used to be linked by taxiway to the main ramp, but most of these now serve as regular roads, only the hangars facing the main ramp are probably in use now. The north side of the airfield stretches all the way to the lake. A military hospital and a housing area are situated there.

Getting There

The city of Lagoa Santa is situated north of Belo Horizonte. Take highway MG-424/MG-10 from Belo Horizonte northbound to Sete Lagoas. Keep to your right following MG-010 towards Lagoa Santa until you reach BR-424. This is the east west connection between Lagoa Santa airfield and Tancredo Neves airport to the west. Currently, work is under way to upgrade MG-010 and connect it to Tancredo Neves Intl.

Around the Airport

1Western approach runway 13

When arriving on the BR-424 from the south, you should literally bump into the airfield. The BR-424 becomes Avenida Salgado Filho and bends left. At the entrance road to the airfield, were the T-6 is preserved, you should be okay for the approach to runway 13.

2East side approach runway 31

Go east from the gate. The road bends right and you will make a left after that, following the airfield perimeter. Right again onto Santos Dumont. You will pass the threshold of runway 31 here.

3East side ramp view

From spot 2 work your way northbound, mind you it is all unpaved roads here! Keep following the perimeter as much as you can. When the asphalt road starts and bends right, the flight line and ramp in front of the hangar is to your left on the other side of the wall!

Alternatively, when you do not feel like 'feeling' your way to spot 3, follow the road along the southern bank of the lake. You will drive past the fenced off military village which houses the airfield. Just when the road bends away from the lake you can go right onto Avenida Um. This is the very asphalt road that leads to spot 3.
