General

Pirassununga, also known as Campo Fontenelle, houses the Air Force Academy (AFA). It is a huge complex with little possibilities to see anything from outside apart from the aircraft flying circuits.

Layout

The airbase has three parallel runways. On the west side, the Tucanos are based using runways 02L/20R and 02C/20C. The eastern part is populated by the T-25 fleet using runway 02R/20L. The base is therefore divided in two halves, there is no taxiway to connect both sides. Just to the south west of the airbase there is a small aerodrome.

Absolutely no point in driving around it to reach the northern approach. You will not even get near. The vast complex has complete villages on it to house the cadets and officers.

Getting There

The airfield is situated east of Pirassununga, north of regional road SP-225. The village itself is about 120km north of Campinas in São Paulo province.

Around the Airport

1View from the main gate

Just before you reach the main gate, you will be able to see some preserved aircraft and the south west part of the Tucano ramp. You still need a sizeable scope and are right in front of the gate...

The road is lined with trees, with a bit of luck you can read some off while they are in the circuit but most of the time you will only see foliage.

2South side circuit view

The main SP-225 road just east of the AFA exit offers some distant views of circuit flying training aircraft. The T-25 are fairly easy to read off from a long distance.

3South west side circuit view

Take the road to the small aerodrome of Pirassununga south west of the airbase. Follow the road past it, this leads to a military housing area. From that road you will be able to watch some circuit flying in the afternoon.
