Galeão is one of the main ports of entry to Brazil. The international airport has two runways and a FAB presence as well.
General
The airport has two runways, laid down in L-shape. There is an industrial area between the thresholds of runway 15 and 10. The airfield is on an island, Ilha do Governador. Therefore, it is hugged by the Baia de Guanabara on three sides, north, west, and south. The east side consists mainly of scrub land.
Civil tenants
The terminal is situated on the north east side of 15/33. On the south west side of 15/33, there is a cargo area. To the south east of runway 10/28 there is a large complex owned by Varig. They have a ramp of their own.
Military tenants
South east of the terminal, the Parque Material of the FAB can be found. South east of that, sharing their ramp and close to the south eastern airport perimeter, the FAB transport units are situated. Opposite that on the other side of runway 15/33 at the cargo ramp, there is a small military passenger terminal as well.
From the south and east
Most will arrive by plane. However, when arriving by car from the south or east, follow BR-101 over the bridge from Niterói until you reach the Linha Vermelha express way / Via Brasil. This will be the first exit after the bridge, stay on the left lanes for that. Take Vermelha northbound. There are now two routes. Either go off the first exit and get onto Pres. João Goulart. This will lead to the airport. Alternatively, stay on Via Brasil and follow this until you get to Av.Brg. Trompowski. Take this exit and follow the signposts to the airport.
From the north
From the north you will approach from BR-040, Rod. Washington Luiz. Follow this southbound into the city until you come to the crossing with BR-116 Av.Pres. João Goulart. Take Goulart eastbound, driving parallel to runway 15/33, until you reach the bridge to the airport.
From the west
Coming from the west, you will already be on BR-116 Pres. Dutra that becomes Pres. João Goulart after crossing BR-040 Washington Luiz. Stay eastbound on Goulart, see above for the rest.
The terminal enables ramp and taxi shots from various spots. (Fabio Laranjeira)
From spot2, this aircraft uses the taxi way over the road towards runway 28. (Fabio Laranjeira)
