General

San José del Guaviare is a small town surrounded by jungle in south eastern Colombia. Apart from being a civil airport, the place is known as a Forward Operating Base of the US Department of State Air Wing. Usually, the eradication fleet is guarded by a package of Colombian army helicopters, which can be found at the airfield as well. Small in size, the airport provides surprising good views despite high security levels due to guerrilla activity in the area. Inform about road security before undertaking the trip by car, alternatively go by air. Beware, aircraft spotting and photography are not generally understood as a hobby in Colombia.

Layout

With only one runway, the layout of the airport is simple. The civil apron can be found on the south side, near the 01 threshold. The south east side of the airport is the military part, with from west to east a ramp for eradication aircraft and two helicopter ramps with six helispots each.

Getting There

San José del Guaviare is almost in the middle of nowhere, with only one road connection with the outside world. The airport is situated north east of the town. When arriving by road 36 from Villavicencio and Puerto Concordia, keep right when in town and the airport will not be hard to find.

Around the Airport

1Runway 01 threshold

On the west side of the airport a road can be found along the entire length of the runway. Although flanked by a hedge, it permits excellent views on the runway. You may want to park your car on the side and stroll the street waiting for your catch of the day. This spot is best for photography towards the end of the afternoon.

2Approach 01

Approach 01 is over the city and wisely construction under its flight path has been minimized. This allows good views of the approach on both sides of the runway. Depending on the light conditions you can move either west or east of the approach. For the west side a small roundabout may come handy, the east side is almost in front of the airport terminal, where nobody will give you strange looks for carrying a camera.

3East side helispots

The DOS compound is heavily guarded and we do not recommend hanging around there for too long. To read some of the Colombian army helicopters used in support of coca eradication missions, move to the east side of the airport. A road to a build-up area further east of the airport provides for elevated views of the helispots. If a spray package of helicopters takes off they are best graphed in the morning, provided that you brought your guts and some luck.
