General

Guayaquil - Simon Bolivar Airport is the second largest airport of Ecuador. It is frequented by airlines from Ecuador and other South-American airlines. It also houses military unit from three serices (Air Force, Navy and Army) and is therefore quite a busy place to be. Spotting opportunities (both photography and reading the serials) are pretty good. Beware of both the police and other people interested in your camera though!

Layout

All civil activity takes place on the Western side of the runway. The Ecuadorian Navy is also situated here. From 'North to South' you can find;
- the domestic and international civil terminal;
- the Navy platform and hangars;
- the Army platform and hangars;
- the general aviation area.
The Air Force unit is on the Eastern side of the runway.

Getting There

Emphasizing on visitors from outside the country the easiest way of getting here is flying to the airport. Guayaquil is, like Quito, one of the few entry-points to Ecuador by air. If you are travelling to the airport by public transport there are numerous shuttle services. The airport is located in the North-Eastern part of the city.

Around the Airport

1Runway 21

The approach of runway 21 is a very good spot to visit. Approaching aircraft can be pictured nicely after they pass the Duale river. Due to the lighting conditions this spot is best visited from mid-day. You can position yourself in the shrubbery that grows between the river bank and the road.

2Parking garage

Just after passing the treshold of runway 21 (when coming from spot 1) you can see a giant parking garage on the left. From this garage you have a good view of the major part of the airport. Photography is not that good since you are facing the sun most of the times but it gives extra serials.

3Runway 03 - one

From the road (well actually the footpath) adjacent to the airport you can view the Air Force part. Helo's are not easy to read but the smaller types of aircraft can be read from here. The stored CL-44 and DC-8 are visible from here as well.

4Runway 03 - two

This is a very nice spot for both runway 21 take-off and runway 03 landing shots (though approaching aircraft appear a bit late). The sun is best before mid-day. The Army and Navy activity can be monitored from here. If possible bring a stepladder though. This spot is frequented by numerous people.

5Air Force platform

A bit further down the road (Macara) the Air Force platform can be overlooked. From this spot the Bell 206' can be read. Be a bit cautious thought since there is a secundary military gate nearby. If you go down the road a bit more (and head left) you can see the other preserved aircraft of the airport/base. First you meet the Meteor and S-55 and the T-33 after that (near the main gate).

6Sheraton Four Points

From the seventh floor of the Sheraton Four Points hotel you get a great view of the airport. Aircraft (military and civil) can be read from here early in the morning and during the late afternoon. Photography is a bit harder because of the windows in the hotel rooms. The hotel is located on (Av) Constitucion (Plaza del sol).
