General

This Army airfield is located in the southwest corner of France. It houses the EAALAT, the unit which trains the future ALAT pilots. Therefore, a lot of Gazelles are based here and all have large dayglow markings and white letter codes.

Layout

The airfield is not that big and rather open. Although the airfield is surrounded by shrubbery or walls, still a lot can be seen. To the south are all the main buildings, to the north is the ALAT museum and some civil aviation companies. The airfield has a concrete runway, but also the taxiway south of the runway is used as take-off and landing spot.

Getting There

When you enter Dax from the north, you will have to drive through Dax city. Take the signs to the D6 and you will find the airfield at the east side. There are signs for the EAALAT from the city which you can follow. When facing the airfield, you will find signs to the ALAT museum.

Around the Airport

1Aerodrome

Driving from Dax on the D6 you will see the airport on your left hand side. Just before the airport there is a road towards the civil aviation companies at the north side. There is also a small parking spot with some benches overseeing the airport and runway. However you are facing south so it can only be used for reading serials.

2West side approach

Crossing the runway from spot 1 on the perimeter road, you can have a good view on all landing aircraft when landing in a easterly direction.

3North side apartment buildings

Head back to the D6 and follow the perimeter clockwise. At the D6/D106 junction go right onto the D106. Just over 100 metres down the road you can go left towards a small park surrounded by apartment buildings. Scale one ore two that are parallel to the D106 and you will have a good oversight of the base and will be able to see some of the stored Gazelles between the buildings on base.

4ALAT museum

Go back to the D106 and follow the signs to the ALAT museum. From the museum, there are some windows which can be used to read helicopters on the north apron. Alternatively, you can have a peek through the nearby crash gate just outside the parking lot. The wall hampers your view.

5East side approach

From the ALAT museum, take the Avenue de l'Aerodrome along the perimeter to the D344 and go right. When the road makes a turn to the right, take the road to the left, park your car near the waste containers and place yourself under the trees. You will be in the approach for the landings in westerly directions.

6South side ramp view

Go back to the D344 and keep following the perimeter fence clockwise. Make a right into the Rue de l'Aerodrome. When it bends to the left and goes down, go up to the fence and you can have some views of the opposite hangars and nearest parking spots of the southern ramp.

With westerly winds, this is the pictures you get on spot 5
