General

Hyères is home to a number of Aéronavale helicopters and hosts regular civil flights to the Toulon area. Situated on the South coast of France this base offers quite a number of nice spots for reading and photography.

Layout

The base has two crossing runways. The French Navy activity is located on the southwestern side of the base (near the D97), whereas the civil terminal is located on the eastern side.

Getting There

You can start travelling the A570 towards Hyères. Once inside the city this turns into the N98. At a roundabout go straight ahead and turn right at the second roundabout. You are now entering the D559. At the end of this road you encounter a large roundabout where you take the second exit. Follow this road and turn left at the end. You are entering de Chemin de la Vilette. This will split up at some kind of roundabout and you head left at this Y-split. You are now entering the Avenue de l'Aéroport (D97) which leads to the base.

Around the Airport

1Runway 14

This spot is the place to be for photographing and reading of aircraft approaching runway 14. To get here from the D97 you turn north at the large crossing when encountering the base. Doing this, while following the signs towards the 'B.A.N.' (Base Aéronavale') you enter the Chemin du Palyvestre. Just after you pass the main gate you can park your car and position yourself for your purposes.

2Runway 05

The approach for runway 05 is also an OK spot for reading and photography. To get here from spot 1, return to the D97 and head south. Same procedure as spot 1; park your car and have a good time.

3Along the hangars

Along the D97 (Avenue de l'Aéroport) take a good look to the base. At certain moments you are able to view the platform (sometimes between the hangars) and read some of the helicopters.

4Runway 32

This spot is very nice for both photography and reading. Apart from being very close to the beach, which is not for public access, approaching aircraft are pretty low. It is also an extra opportunity for reading of helicopters in or in front of the hangars. To get here continue the D97 and turn left at the round about (onto the Boulevard de la Marine, D42), towards the civil terminal. You can park your car on the dirt road on the right side of the road and position yourself to your liking.

5Civil terminal

Drive to the terminal for an extra view on the tarmac (both civil and military). This may result in extra serials.

6Runway 23

After exiting the terminal, go left on the D42. Then go left into the Rue de Ceinturion. This will take you underneath the threshold of runway 23 were you should be able to find a spot in the approach.

7Chemin de Roubaud

At the end of Chemin de Roubaud you can enter a foodpath along the perimeter fence. There is a small hill here that allows perfect views, and photo options, over the fence. From here, you can also walk to spot 6.

8Fire dump

To spot the aircraft at the fire dump you should follow the track along the northwestern perimeter fence. This can be reached by entering it from the west, just north of spot 1. Also, you can take the Chemin du Roubaud and enter it from the east.

Spot 4 is good for landing shots, as this photo of a Navy AS565 shows. (Jaco Haasnoot)
