General

This is the jet fighter base of the Aéronavale and therefore very interesting. Do remind that the main base for the fighters is the French carrier and that one Flotille is therefore absent. While 12F has been re-equipped with the Rafale M, the other Flotilles are still operating the Super Etendard Modernisee, awaiting their replacement in the near future. Some Crusaders and Etendards are stored at this airfield.

Layout

The airfield has a west-east runway with all the aprons at the south side. Both runway-ends have a fake carrier deck with the necessary deck landing mirrors at the side of the runway.

Getting There

Drive into Bretagne, towards Brest via highway N12/E50. After Landivisiau, take the D32 towards St Derrien. At the first crossroad take the D30 to the right for spot 1 and 2 or continue for spot 3.

Around the Airport

1East side approach

When driving on the D30 towards Bodilis and Langeoguer you will pass the runway centreline. At this position you are rather far away from the airfield but should be able to see some landing traffic. Coming from the south, just before Bodilis, at the first crossing, take a left turn and then on a small road to the right, to arrive closer to the runway. On the dirt road towards this spot you will have a view onto some stored Etendards and Crusaders. At the spot you will also have a view onto the apron with Falcon 10MERs and room to move around for the best shots with the use of a five step ladder.
Alternatively you can get here by driving north on the D30 through the village of Bodilis. As you leave the village there is a Lay-By on the left, a single track leads off this Lay-By. Go down this track for about one kilometre and you come to the airfield fence.

2North side

When continuing the D30, you will have to take the turn to the left towards Kemoter and Kerlaer. In this village, go left to the south to arrive at the fence. The road is rather overgrown and you will need some steps at the gate.

3West side approach

After Landivisiau take the D32 towards Saint Derrien. You will pass the runway centreline. After the centreline, take the first right and on this small road the first right again. This will lead towards the beginning of the runway. Also you will have a view onto the aprons and a run-up hangar.

4View onto apron

Spot 4 will give you a nice elevated view onto the SEM before their 11F hangar. For this spot take the D32 from Landiviseau and go right towards Drévers where you have to go left to Saint-Servais. At the Y-junction, take a left onto a private road. Along this road you will have a good view onto this apron.

5Main gate

The main gate gives a good view onto the preserved aircraft here. From Landiviseau, on the D32, take the third right towards the main gate.

This AN Super Etendard is shot from near spot 1 with 450 mm digital (Terry Burke)

Near spot 1 one can also photograph aircraft on the ground. A 5-step stepladder is needed though. This Mirage 2000 was shot with 420 mm digital. (Terry Burke)
