General

Le Luc can be considered the foremost helicopter airfield of the French army. The international training of Tiger pilots takes place here and for that reason also German Tigers can be seen here along with Ecureuils, Gazelles and Pumas.

Layout

The airfield has two runways and all active hangars are to the south of that. The southwest side is the home of the Ecureuils and Tigers, their modern garage-like hangar is along a ramp that is lower than the main ramps. To the east of that, there is a huge ramp with a slight bend halfway down. These hangars contain Gazelles, Pumas and more Ecureuils as well as some maintenance. On that ramp some temporary hangar-barns are also situated.

Getting There

The base is south of the A8 highway that runs from Aix-en-Provence to Cannes. Moreover, the A57 highway to Toulon is just to the west side of the base as well. From the A8 head towards Toulon on the A57 but take the first exit, no.13 called Le Cannet-des-Maures. From there, take the DN7 towards Vidauban, this is the first right on the roundabout after passing the toll booth. So, do not go towards the village of Le Luc! After under passing the A57, make a right onto the D17 southbound. Go left towards the village of La Grande Bastide on the Chemin de Portal and you will end at the airfield perimeter.

Around the Airport

1West side approach runway 13

The Chemin de Portal will end at the base perimeter and at the T-junction you can see part of the nearest ramps. Halfway down the first ramp there is an earth dyke that obscures part of your view. At this spot you are also between the thresholds of runways 09 and 13 which makes hovering helicopters an easy prey.

2Crash gate

Go north from spot 1 keeping the fence to your right hand side. After about 400 metres you will reach a crash gate, from here you have a slightly different angle and have more height as well for extra codes.

EC145 seen at spot 2, close to the current location of its shelter. (Tom Buysse)
