General

This airport is now called Mediterrannée but the old name Fréjorgues might sound more familiar to some. It is one of France's up and coming charter destinations served by various price fighters. It also has fair amount of general aviation traffic and the inevitable Gendarmerie and Sécurité Civile helicopter detachments. It is ranked as France's 12th airport and sees just over 1.25 million passengers each year.

Layout

The airport has two parallel runways, a smaller one on the west side for GA use and the main runway to the east. The main terminal is situated in between them. Between the terminal and the west runway, some smaller ramps and hangars are located. Among these, furthest to the southwest, is the one of the Sécurité Civile and Gendarmerie.

Getting There

The airport is to the southeast of Montpellier town, south of highway A9. It is bordered to the west by major through road D66 and hugs the shore of Lake Mauguio. Simply take the D66 southbound off the A9 and follow the signposts.

Around the Airport

1General aviation ramp

After entering the airport terrain, you will reach a roundabout. Just before the roundabout, there is a general aviation ramp to your right.

2Small ramps

At the roundabout, take the first exit to the right. This road will make a sharp left turn, take the first right after that and enter the parking lot to get to some smaller general aviation ramps.

3Crash gate

Proceed on the same road as mentioned at spot 2. Just after the bend to the right, you can go left. You will reach another roundabout; go straight, the second exit. This will bring you to a gate behind which part of the ramp is visible. You have to keep well clear of the gate because it is a crash gate as well.

4Gendarmerie and Sécurité Civile

Head back to the road again, make a left. This road ends at the airfield fence but before that you will be able to see another ramp. The paramilitary helicopter detachments are there and their helicopters can be seen when they are parked outside.

If the hangars are closed or nothing is outside, you can backtrack and take the first exit to your left. This road leads to the parking lot behind the hangars. Ask the duty officer if you can see the helicopters.

5Terminal

Last landside spot is in the terminal itself. After checking in you will have an unobstructed view of the ramp.

6Northwest side approach 13L

For the northwest approach to main runway 13L, exit the airport and take the first right, not the D66, but D172 Route de Mauguio. The road bends left and then right, following the airfield perimeter. In that right-hand bend, there is a road that forks off to your right, with a shortcut to it. In the triangle between the two roads and the shortcut, you should be in the right position for 13R approaches. This is just outside the tiny village of Vauguières le Haut.

7Southeast side approach 31L

There is no spot to watch the traffic from the south. The only feasible option is for the minor runway and it takes a detour to get there. Go southbound on D66 and take the exit to D21e1, Rue Marcel Pagnol but take the third exit on the roundabout. You will now be driving parallel to the D66 southbound. After about 500m, there is at last an opportunity to cross the D66 and get on it in the northbound direction. Just before the exit to D21, you can exit the D66 making a right turn onto Chemin de Faïsses. This road ends at an oil depot, but there is a dirt rack along the north of that. This is closed with a pole, we do not know the possibilities at this exact point or its surroundings. Feedback requested!
