General

Pau is an airfield that sees both civil and military traffic. It houses an army helicopter regiment, the first operational Tigre unit, as well as a Sécurité Civile detachment. For civil aviation, Pau is the destination for some 'scheduled' charter flights, like Ryanair and Transavia, along with the usual Air France lifeline with Paris.

Layout

The airfield is basically split in two. The northern side has the civil terminal and ramps. The Sécurité Civile is on that side as well, in the northwest corner. The southern side is occupied by the army helicopters. It occupies a large chunk of base dotted with trees, embankments, buildings, and earth walls, which all make it virtually impossible to get a good view of the ramps.

Getting There

The airfield used to be known as Uzein, the village just northwest of it. From the A64 highway that runs from west to east north of the city of Pau, take exit 10 and drive along the highway on Boulevard Olof Palme. This is the first right on the roundabout after leaving the highway. This will take you to another roundabout, again the first right which will be the N134 north to Bordeaux and Mont-de-Marsan. After 1.75km, you have to take the D716 Route D'Uzein to your left. This will take you straight to the airfield which will pop up on your left-hand side.

Around the Airport

1Terminal and civil ramps

From the terminal side, you can have some views of the civil ramp. The helicopter of the Sécurité Civile can be seen, provided that it is outside.

2East side approach and tree climb

Yes, that is correct. If you want to see something you have to find a high spot. There used to be a tree along one of the field tracks off D289 suitable for this (probably at the Chemin de l'Ayguelongue). You will have to take the D289 Route de Lescar southbound along the perimeter for that. Also, the approach crosses the D289, so if you move a bit north the aircraft will pass quite closely.

3West side approach

From spot 2, continue south, the road will now be Route de l'Aviation. After passing the highway, take the first exit on the roundabout onto D509. At the next roundabout, make a right again, taking the first exit onto the D945. Follow this, and cross the highway again. Continue until you reach the hamlet of Beyrie-en-Béarn and go right on the D208. This is called the Route du Lac and leads to the Lac d'Uzein. About 1.5km after turning into D208, there is a cross road, make a right here at Chemin de Navailles and go left on a track 100 metres down the road. This should take you into the approach of runway 13. Alternatively, stay on D208 and park along this road a bit north of the cross roads.
From spot 1, it is better to go counter-clockwise. Follow the D716 to Uzein and go left before you reach the centre of the village, this will be the D208 Route de Lac.
