General

Rennes is one of those typical French regional airports, with a mix of civil and military passenger and cargo traffic. Air France operates most regional services, with regional jets and turboprops. Also FlyBe has a significant presence, with flights to the British isles. Finally there are charters to Mediterranean holiday resorts. Add the French army with TBM-700s and you have a good reason for a quick (or longer) stop. There are two aeroclubs at the airport. One is opposite the terminal with three Fouga Magisters, three Vampires, a Stampe, a Beagle and some light stuff. The other one is on the south side of the field and has a Caravelle of Air Inter and two Mirages stored. Yankee Delta is resident here with their Fouga Magister demo team.

Layout

The airport has two runways, intersecting with their western ends. Most activities are concentrated in between the runways at the east side of the airport. Cargo is at the north side.

Getting There

Rennes is approximately at the border of Bretagne and Normandie in the western part of France. From Paris it is reached via Autoroute A10, A11 and A81. The airport is just southwest of the city, off the ring road N136.

Around the Airport

1Terminal

The terminal of St. Jacques allows the majority of the aircraft to be seen. You can even take photos, although through a window. From the viewing area inside the terminal you can see on the display board where arriving aircraft will park and where they come from.

2ALAT

The hangars of the French army are at the back of the main car park (opposite the terminal). Most of the time, you will see them parked in front of their hangars and if you are lucky, the helicopter of the French police is parked opposite. A three to four step ladder is necessary as the fence is covered. By the way, parking is free only for the first hour!!

3Runway 28

For photos of landing aircraft enter St.Jacques village from the airport. Just before some shops, turn into a narrow road with a car park sign. You’ll be right at the fence. Besides landing aircraft you will see aircraft taxiing from the terminal approaching you from the left, holding shortly before going onto the runway in front of you. A three-step ladder is necessary!

4Cargo

This road to the left of the cargo apron used to be a very good spot for early morning photography of landing and departing aircraft. However, the road is now a dead end street, leaving it just suitable to park here a walk to the finals or to get to the cargo apron. From the fence you should be able to snap what is parked here through the fence or over it using a three-step ladder. You will have to cross a (dry) ditch for that until you reach a concrete path next to the fence.

5Rue de la Vigne

This is an alternative for spot 4 if you want to take pictures of aircraft on the runway. The spot is at a right bend in the road. Between the road and the fence is a motorcross practice facility.

6Runway 10

If runway 10 is in use, follow signs for Cargo and continue all the way till road joins with another one. The landing lights are on your left. Park somewhere on the parallel road and walk towards the fence through rough land.

7Aeroclub

This is where the former Air Inter Caravelle and two Mirages are preserved. Yankee Delta, with her Fouga Magisters, is based here as well.

Air Nostrum is one of the feeder airlines flying to Rennes. This CRJ is taken from the terminal (spot 1). Photo by Jeep Stoker.

Yankee Delta operates a fleet of Fouga Magisters. Jeep Stoker photographed one aircraft from the ramp near spot 2, after asking permission.
