General

This French training base, home to the Patrouille de France and some smaller types of training aircraft, is a 'one side only' base. On the southern side of the base are multiple options for photography and serial gathering. Just north of the A54 highway (where you exit), CM170 531 is preserved at a roundabout. This one is clearly visible and an easy fetch.

Layout

The base is relatively large and houses a number of activities. The Patrouille de France and the EVAA aircraft are located in the northeast area of the base. This area is almost completely surrounded by buildings and does not offer a good view. The advanced pilot training aircraft are situated in the south western part of the base. This side is very open and convenient for the hobby.

Getting There

The base is located south of the city of Salon de Provence. It is practically enclosed by highways A7 (to the west) and A54 (north of the base). To get to the base and line up for the best spots you best exit where both highways cross and head for Pelisanne (in the east). Just before you enter this town you turn right on the roundabout towards Lançon-Provence. You will end up on road number D15 and cross the A7 highway shortly afterwards. After crossing you take the second exit to the right (crossing the river) and follow this road. The base will show up on your right after about 2 kilometers.

Around the Airport

1Runway 34

The first spot to visit is the approach of runway 34. This spot is OK for both photography and reading numbers. To get here park your car on the right just before you pass the approach (while approaching the base with the description given above). The shrubbery here offers some shade and blocks the view from the tower. This spot is OK for the serials as well if runway 16 is in use. Photography will probably not give the results you are looking for though.

2Platform

This spot is an alternative to spot 1. It gives another view on (and in) the hangars and offers more options for parking and hiding. This is not the spot to visit if you are into photography only! To get here turn right onto a paved road (towards a crash gate) just before you reach spot 1. You can position yourself underneath a number of trees halfway towards the fence.

3Runway 34

This spot is an alternative to spot 1, depending in the position of the sun at a particular time of the day. Coming from spot 2 you can position yourself on the right side of the road just after passing the runway approach lighting. Both reading and photography are options from here.

4East side glider ramp

From Lançon take road D15 along the canal and make a left onto road D68. Just before the road bends right, go left into a farmland track. From there you can catch a glimpse of the glider ramp through the undergrowth.

5Main gate

The large area near the main gate (partially accessible) gives the opportunity to view the Mystère that is preserved here. To get here follow the clear sign posts.

6Lançon-Provence

The village of Lançon is on higher land than the airfield allowing distant views of the air base. You will need a really strong pole to identify anything but it provides a good overview.

Spot 3 gives a nice view of the approaching aircraft. (Frank Noort)
