General

The airfield is also known as Santa Elena, after the nearby city, and is sometimes even referred to as Tikal, which airport near the ruins is currently serving as a parking lot! The Guatemalan military refers to Flores as Base Aérea Danilo Eugenio Henry Sanchez and Base Aérea del Norte. It is the main gateway to Guatemala's northern Petén province with its interesting Maya culture, in particular Tikal. Most civil aircraft arrive with tourists around 07.00 AM and depart around 04.00 PM.

Layout

The civil terminal is located south west of the single 10/28 runway. The military part is halfway along the north side of the runway and is invisible from outside the fence. The military gate is near the 28 threshold.

Getting There

The airfield is located just east of Santa Elena, about 2kms east of the causeway connecting the island of Flores with the mainland. From Santa Elena, just follow its main street Calle 4A to the east and you will find the terminal on your left.

Around the Airport

1Civil apron

From the parking lot in front of the civil terminal you can easily see the aircraft parked on the civil apron. Photography is almost impossible from here because of the many obstacles. Upon request you might be allowed to enter the arrivals hall and make a few pics from there.

2Approach 10

The only spot to watch flying aircraft at Flores is probably spot 2. From the terminal, head to the 10 threshold and take the first dirt road on your right. Turn right again towards the airfield fence and right again near the cemetery. When runway 10 is in use, the aircraft are easy to graph from here.

3Military gate

The military gate is guarded by a T-bird on a stick. The wreck of a Dakota can be seen through the woods just west of the military gate on the south side the small taxi track.
