General

This Hungarian Air Force base is home to the fleet of training aircraft (formally detached from Kecskemet) and all helicopters. Furthermore it houses the Hungarian Air Force museum. Most of the museum aircraft can be seen from the outside. This does not apply to the aircraft that are part of the technical school on the base. A number of stored aircraft and choppers can also be found but their identities are hard to establish from the outside. It only offers two spots for photography and some extra options for reading the serials.

Layout

All military activity is located west of the runway. The large base has numerous active and inactive helicopter parking spots. The helicopters are scattered around the base. The active training aircraft are normally parked outside.

Getting There

The base is located south-southeast of the city of Szolnok. To get here you can use road number E60/4 (from Budapest to Debrecen). When near Szolnok you have to exit where road number 442 is indicated (south of the city). From this exit head south using road 442. You will automatically end up at the base after about 2 kilometers.

Around the Airport

102 approach

The approach of runway 02 crosses road number 442 and offers opportunities for reading and taking pictures of the active aircraft (though helicopters might prefer other routes). A specific spot to your liking can be found easily.

2Platform view

From across the runway you can view the platforms. The view of the platforms is blocked by bushes and shrubbery though frequently. Photography is not an option and for number collecting you will find yourself stopping multiple times. You will probably decide to leave your car and walk for the extra number eventually. The dirt path along the base fence can be found be turning left towards the base after passing the final homes on your right.

320 approach

This spot offers an interesting option for photography when runway 20 is in use. The farm path that leads to this spot is very rough and probably impassable after rainfall. The track (from spot 2) swings left towards position 3 and goes up a rise giving wonderful views of aircraft on approach and right down the runway.

4Museum

Near the main gate the entrance of the Hungarian Air Force museum is located. If you are not visting the museum itself you can have a peek at the exhibits from the outside. This peek allows you to write down most of the displayed aircraft.

Spot 3 is very good for photography, as shown by this An-26. (Matt Critchley)
