General

Adampur is one of India's fighter bases in the north belonging to Western Command.

Layout

The air base has a northwest-southeast runway. The northeast side is heavily wooded and contains two large shelter areas with flight lines along the taxiway. The southwest area holds the buildings and some more shelters, a flight line and some large hangars, visible from spots 1 to 4. The gate is at the westernmost tip, a MiG-21 is preserved well inside this gate which is not visible.
The base is completely walled off. The southeast side is rather open though, and surrounded by farmland. In theory you can pick a spot everywhere when you venture deep into farmland. However, the watch towers are rather big and there is little opportunity to hide yourself. Moreover, there are always people at work in these farmlands. Nonetheless, there are some half decent spots there.

Getting There

The easiest way to find the right roads is to get onto the NH70 that runs through Adampur village. From the NH1 just southeast of Jullundur there is a roundabout, the Rama Mandi Chowk. Go right onto the NH70 towards Adampur (exit at 31°18'25.75"N, 075°37'37.33"E). After 17.5 km you will reach an intersection with a small bridge over the canal. Go right on the southwest bank of the canal and proceed for another 650 metres. Make a left and right to get onto the east bank again and continue south to reach spots 1 to 4.

For the seasoned navigators among us there are two other approaches to the NH70 intersection in Adampur village. From the north, coming or going to the NH1 from or to Pathankot, take the eastbound road in the southern outskirts of Bhogpur Sirwal (exit at 31°33'4.72"N, 075°38'27.50"E), cross the railway and bend right. This road runs south, more or less in a straight line, for about 15 km when you will reach the east bank of the canal. From there, follow the east bank for about 750 metres, you will then be at the intersection with the NH70.

From the south, when coming from the Ludhiana area, there is also a short cut which is even more difficult to find. From the NH1 make a right at the north western outskirts of Phagwara (exit at 31°13'28.05"N, 075°45'59.13"E). Go northeast for about 18 km. Having reached the canal, make a left on the northeast bank. After about 7 km you will reach the small road leading to spots 1 to 4.

Around the Airport

1Southeast side approach, distant - p.m.

To reach spot 1, follow the road on the east bank for about 3.7 km. You will pass four options to go left, take the fifth. Some of these exits have gates, probably with name of the village on it. The one to take is white has a bus stop, with small waiting cabin, and a date on it (1-8-2000 or something similar). It is at 31°24'39.40"N, 075°45'29.65"E. Follow the road along the east of the village to the T-junction, make a right. For afternoon light, go into the farmland here somewhere. Spot 1 is about 500 metres southwest from the centreline of the approach, so relatively distant. The touchdown point is about 750 metres away. Please note that the farmland lay-out differs all the time.

2Southeast side approach, closer - p.m.

You can take another sand track into the farmland which under passes the approach. You will be about 1.1 kilometres from the touchdown point, but closer to the centreline, about 175 metres away. So expect the approaching aircraft to be rather high albeit closer than at spot 2.

3Southeast side approach, close - a.m.

Follow the 'main' road you were on to reach spot 1 and 2. Upon reaching the next village, make a left at the T-junction. The road makes a sharp right turn and a left bend turning away from the village into the farmland again. This road runs straight and makes a sharp right turn. Actually, this is sort of a junction, albeit with two sand tracks. Make a left to reach spot 3. There is little to hide your car from sight here. You will be in full sight of the watch towers, the approaching aircraft and relatively busy traffic on the asphalt road behind you... The centreline for the approach is about 350 metres to the south, touchdown point is about 800 metres away.

4Southeast side approach, distant - a.m.

It might be smarter to opt for spot 4 for morning light views. At the 'intersection' mentioned at spot 3, go straight on the track towards a wooded patch. There is a well along the road and past the bushes there is another track left with another well. Obviously, the local workers like these shaded spots as well. You will now be further from the centreline, which is about 650 metres to the south. The touchdown point is about 800 metres away.

5Northwest side approach, close - p.m.

Take the NH70 from Adampur northeast bound to Hoshiarpur, the road is sometimes signposted as such. Just past the road to a military area on the left, there is a n obscure sand track to the left. Enter that, you will be out of sight from the main road, but in full sight of one of the watch towers of the aforementioned bunker complex. You are only 150 metres from the centreline though, so no need to get out of your car.

6Northwest side approach, distant - p.m.

Again you can position yourself a little bit further from the main road and centreline. Down side is that you will be even closer to the military area mentioned at spot 5. Basically, follow the track northbound from spot 5, it bends left towards the military area. There are some bushes to obscure you from sight of that though. You will now be about 325 metres from the centreline but further away from the touchdown point which is still some 1.2 km away.

7Northwest side approach, distant - a.m.

Last opportunity is a bit further away from the approach and suitable for early morning light. Follow the NH70 past the airbase. On the northern outskirts, were the perimeter ends, make a left taking the first road into the village of Kathar. Needless to say the village is not signposted, not in English anyhow. Make a left away from the village when the road bends right. Follow this road, past the brick oven with chimney, for just less than 2 km. Find a bush or tree, the centreline is about 350 metres away, but this is to your discretion as the road under passes it. The touchdown point is a bit far away though, 1.2 km or thereabouts.
