General

The airbase is smack in the middle of Ambala cantonment, which is a military enclave much like an US army fort. Accessible, but full of military installations and more than a 50/50 chance that any person you come across is actually in the military.

Layout

Ambala has a northwest-southeast runway. The parallel runway south of that is no longer used. On the west and east side are two shelter areas with small flight lines along the taxiway. The south side holds the maintenance hangar and some further ramp space. The gate is on the southwest side too, it is guarded by a pole-mounted Hunter in grey/black tiger c/s.

Getting There

Reaching the spots is easiest from the north although there is a hideous fly-over were NH22 meets the NH1 with rather unclear road signs bound to throw you off your course. Keep left on the NH22/NH1 towards Delhi or else you will make a u-turn onto the NH1 northbound because that is were Ambala village itself is!

Around the Airport

1Southeast side approach

To reach this spot, coming from the north, enter the cantonment area at 30°22'4.22"N, 76°47'55.19"E. There is a very tight gate marking the entrance to the military area, you have to really slow down to get the car between the obstacles!
At the gate, you can see the Jaguar barns straight from behind, not wise to stop here; besides, they are tail on. There is an unmarked pole mounted Hunter in grey/black tiger c/s here. Just after the gate, make a left at 30°21'14.13"N, 76°49'31.16"E. Go right following the road and immediately left after that. This is the road running along the wall underneath the west side perimeter. It is just north of the officer's apartment complex. No stopping or parking allowed at any road in the cantonment, titanium balls required...

You can also venture in the area north of that. Lots of military barracks, at some point you will actually pass a manned gate. This will only lead you to army barracks north of the wall. The airfield itself is obscured from sight.

2Northwest side approach

The northwest side offers little possibility. The urban area in the fork of the NH1 and NH22 roads, might offer some chances. But it will be hard to find the exact spot as there is no reference until the aircraft come in to land. It will probably be filled with people also. To get there, take the NH22 northbound, keeping left at the flyover-connector with the NH1. After under passing the NH1 continue for about 1.4 km and make a left at the cross road. This road will take you to the NH1 again, but just before you reach it, take the slip road running parallel and to the east of the NH1. Make a left after 400 metres. There is a piece of barren land just 100 metres from the centreline of the northern approach. It is 1.2 km from touchdown though. For take off, they will be way too high.

3Northwest side view

Not found during 2009, but a possible location is a road along the perimeter near the threshold of the southern disused runway. Just after clearing the cantonment area, 250 metres past the tight gate mentioned at spot 1, you can make a left just after an arch over the road. The road follows the wall and bends right. In that corner, the threshold of the old runway is just behind the wall. Going a bit further to the west may provide useful views of aircraft taking off.
