General

Bhatinda air base, or Bhisiana as it is sometimes called, should hold a MiG-21 squadron. The base is situated 20 km northwest of Bathinda town.

Layout

The military air base has a northwest-southeast runway. There are two dispersal areas, one on the south side and the other on the north side. The base has a perimeter wall with omnipresent watch towers, not all are manned but most are.

Getting There

From Bathinda take the main road out of town in a northerly direction. This is the northern bypass called Firozpur road and it is marked NH64/NH15 on most maps. Just north of town you cross a canal and there is a huge power plant with tall cooling towers, make a left towards that. This is the NH15. After 5km there is a road forking off to the right, make a right. Drive on for 10 km and you will have to go left, it is signposted as Bhisiana Air Force Station.

Around the Airport

1Southeast side approach - p.m.

Drive to the gate of the air force station, but make a left along the wall just before that. This road hugs the perimeter. After under passing the approach, you can make a right towards a dyke. You can position yourself near the bridge over the canal or cross it and take the first left on a tree-lined path.

2Southwest side approach - a.m.

In the morning, it is better to walk along the north side of the canal under passing the approach. The bushes block the view from the nearest watch tower. You can go here by car as well, but that is rather conspicuous obviously. Walk into the farmland a bit for a clearer view.

3Southwest side close-up

The last spot is on the road along the wall under the approach. This is in full sight of the road, but not the watch towers. The protruding bit of perimeter wall blocks their view. The aircraft will be more or less straight overhead though and the road is rather busy with locals, no bins needed.

4Northwest side approach - p.m.

The northern side is much harder to find. Easiest is to go back to the main road towards Muktsar and Jalalabad. Go left. You will pass another irrigation canal but the path along it is not driveable by car unfortunately. At the next village, Sohna, make a left towards Chotian. Both are not sign posted by the way. At the village go clockwise and take the second track to your left. This will lead to the canal. You can walk left, to the weat along the canal for afternoon light. Touchdown is still some 1.2 km away.
Alternatively, cross the canal and make a right at the wall. Only advisable if the watch tower is not manned.

5Northwest side approach - a.m.

Same as spot 4, but now go right, east along the canal.
You can also take the first left in the village. This is a wider track, but it runs further away from the centreline, some 800 metres.
