General

Dundigal, also written as Dundigul, houses the air force academy of the Indian air force. It is situated about 25 km north-northwest of Hyderabad.

Layout

The terrain of the air force academy spans over 6,700 acres. Luckily, most is to the north of the active flying area that is sandwiched by two roads that run along both thresholds. The northern runway is used by the Kirans, the southern by the HPT32. On several spots, both on and off-airport, preserved aircraft can be found.

Getting There

From the northwest of Hyderabad, near the airport, you have to take the road northbound towards Medak. You can also take highway 7 northbound, but is hard to explain were to make a left exactly.

from west to east side

To get from the west to the east side, go back south a bit. About 2,5 km from the 10R threshold, there is a road going east. You can not miss it, a large white and blue gate marks the entrance. This will lead to a small village. Go left upon entering the village when the through road bends right. You will have to drive around a wooden obstacle to get on this road, do not worry, the locals do it all the time! You will now be on a dyke and drive towards spots 3 and 4.

from Hakimpet

From Hakimpet, go south a bit. Go right (west) just before the preserved Iskra. Go right at the T-junction in Bolarum, keep to the left at the Y-junction. Cross the rail road south of Bolarum station. This is also the road that leads from the east to the west side of Hakimpet. Upon reaching highway 7, make a left and take the first right immediately afterwards. This will bring you to the Medak road, go right and you will reach Dundigal.

Around the Airport

1West side approach 10L/R

The west side approach crosses the road to Medak. Just before you reach the threshold there is a road left. Take this and drive on until you reach a ruin of a building on your lefthand side. Go left on the sand path. You will be relatively out of view although the aircraft are rather high and far away still. Good for reading.

2West side approach, between runways

The Deepaks tend to use both runways so you are bound to miss some. To have a better look at the northern runway, take the road that forks of from the one leading to spot 1. This northbound road is small also and has many locals travelling on it. About halfway to the village there is a small ruin. Park your car there and you will be able to watch both approaches, albeit somewhat overhead for 10R.

3Southeast side ramp view

The aforementioned road to the eastern approach, runs on a dyke. When this road makes a sharp turn to the right there is a small military gate. Just west of that a sand path runs along the airfield fence. From the corner you can clear the southern ramp. Venturing westward on this path will offer views of the opposite ramps that are too far and the heath waves hamper reading off aircraft. You can see the preserved Marut, Ouragan and a stored MiG-25 from here though... Not sure how far east you will be able to go, maybe all the way to the 10R threshold.

4East side approach 28L/R

Between the small village Nagloor and the threshold of 28R, there are enough places to watch the aircraft. Unluckily, this road is rather small and has surprisingly much trafic on it, especially trucks. Also, you are in view of the base perimeter road and near the village. Not easy to park your car either. But you can clearly see the last chance point and can nearly read the aircraft without bins.
