General

Jodhpur is an important military air base doubling as the civil airport for Jodphur city, best known for its fortress.

Layout

The airfield has a southwest-northeast runway. The west side holds a transport ramp, the civil terminal and a small ramp and hangar belonging to the Alouette III unit is on the north western side.
The east side holds a ramp with long low hangars, mostly occupied by the MiG-21bisons, a dispersal area with flight line for one of the MiG-27 units and ramps and flight lines for the Mi-17s in the centre and lastly more dispersals in the northeast corner.

Getting There

The airfield is situated in the south eastern outskirts of town. Most convenient mode of transport is arrival by aircraft. One of the spots is in walking distance of the terminal and landing and taxiing provides view of various ramps.

Around the Airport

1North side approach

This is not an ideal spot. It is against the light and 23 is not the preferred runway. To get here go right when coming from the terminal. After the perimeter ends there is a road to the left and a gate and low brick wall to the right. Behind the brick wall there is private farmland. From the bushy patch between the wall and road you can watch the approach to runway 23.

2South side approach

Not checked yet, but the south side holds a possible spot. The airport area is surrounded by various military installations. Follow the NH65 clockwise around these towards Pali. Just before the roundabout, were the NH65 bends sharply right to the south, make a left into the village (at 26°13'49.07"N, 73° 2'8.23"E). Follow the road when it bends left after 300 metres and continue straight. Make a left at the northern outskirts of the village and you will be east of the approach.

3From the aircraft

One of the best opportunities is from arriving or departing aircraft. The runway is used for back tracking to runway 05 which seems the most used runway. Try to get a left hand side window site on departure. This will first take you past the Alouettes (readable with bare eyes). After turning onto the runway, you will pass the Mi-17 and later the MiG-21 ramp. Just before that you can just catch a glimpse of the MiG-27 flight line in the dispersal area. For arrival you have to take a right hand side window seat.

If you taxy from the terminal to runway 05 you will pass the MiG-21bison flight line.
