General

This is Esfahan's second airport, right on the southeast city limit. It holds many helicopters as well as a state flying club. Surrounded by a wall, it will be difficult to gain a clear view.

Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Iran!

Layout

North side

The north side of the airfield houses light training aircraft from both the military, presumably the air force, as the state flying club. This part of the base used to house the old civil terminal, that part has fallen into disuse.

South side

The southwest has a sizeable ramp holding army AH-1, AB205 and AB206 helicopters. But the piece de resistance is the main ramp situated half way down the runway on the south side. More AH-1, Bell 206 and scores of CH-47 helicopters occupy this immense platform. Lastly, the southeast ramp also holds some choppers. This is probably a maintenance area.

The hilly area in the southeast runs all the way to Shahid Vatan Pour air base and is a fully fenced off military terrain. That is a pity, because it is higher than the airfield and should provide views of the ramps, the road itself does at some points.

Getting There

From the city centre, take Sa'adat Abad eastbound. This will bring you north of the airfield. Alternatively, follow the south bank of the river on Abshar. This road will lead past the eastern threshold.

Around the Airport

1East side approach runway 26R, south side

The main road runs past the threshold. Just south of the runway there is another gate, so be aware when spotting aircraft here. Maybe it is better to keep your distance and find a spot northeast of the river...

2East side approach runway 26R, north side

North of the threshold there is a patch of desolate land. You will be against the light most of the time, but it may be easier to stay a bit longer here.

3West side approach runway 08L

The west side approach is over a suburb. Take one of the streets off Sheikh Saddouq. The one illustrated leads to a gate again.

4Northwest side approach runway 08L

The southern overrun of Kh.Jahanquir-Khan-é-Qashqaei, south of Sa'adat Abad, may offer some vies of the approaching helicopters from the north.

5North side ramp view

There is a road running all the way along the northern perimeter wall. It can be reached by exiting Kh.Sajjad onto Sheikh Abbas-é-Khalili and immediately turning right towards the airfield. This is a place were you would wish the wall was not there, you could hazard to climb one of the trucks or piles of rubish that are sometimes near the wall.
