General

Esfahan's international airport is located to the northeast of town. It is also known as Khatami airbase denoting its dual use as civil airport and military base. It is situated in a desolate piece of land and the airfield occupies a massive portion of it.

Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Iran!

Layout

The base has a civil terminal and ramp just south of the dual runway. There is another runway more to the south, but that is not in use. The military operate from the northern part of the airport. That area has a raster of taxiways, not all of which are probably in use.

Getting There

The airport is connected to the city by two highways. One runs north and then east out of town, Otoban-é-Forudgah, whereas the other runs east and then north.

Around the Airport

1Terminal

After check in, the terminal offers views of the relatively small ramp. Also, there is no taxiway so the active aircraft will have to back track on one of the runways passing the terminal. Besides that, the restaurant in the domestic terminal offers a good view as well. This is acessible for non-passengers as well.

2East side approach runway 26L/R

The east side approach is bordering on the impossible. The only conceivable place is the sand track that runs along the eastern perimeter of the airport. The runway thresholds are well within the airfield terrain, so the aircraft are bound to come in at satellite height here. Moreover, it is rather inexplicable how to get to this track. Easiest method is to head back to the highway and head for Yazd instead of Esfahan. After about 15km at Sistan, near the railway underpassing there is a left turn towards Vartun. You have to make a u-turn further down the road to enter this northern bound exit. Just before entering Vartun, you can turn left, basically back to the airfield. The direction is Habibabad / Dowlat Abad. You are now driving westwards again. After a while you can see the airfield infrastructure coming up. Ner the perimeter, the road bends sharply to the right, head left into a sand path. This will lead southward towards and along the perimeter fence and eventually to spot 2.

3West side approach runway 08L/R

The west side probably offers the best opportunities for watching aircraft. A myriad of farmland roads and tracks enables you to find a spot out of direct sight from the airport. The aircraft will be a bit high though and the other approach is used more often. After the exit to the military gate, leave the highway and head for the village. Go through the village towards a mosque. Find a spot past there.
