General

This is the military airfield of Hamadan, situated well north on the outskirts of Kabudar Ahang. On this base about twenty ex-Iraqi Fitters are stored and it should also house a wing with Phantoms which, seems unlikely.

Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Iran!

Layout

The airfield used to have three active runways in the 4 km range, due to its height. Signs of bombardment are evident and only the southern of the parallel runways remains active. The north corner has a shelter area. Among these walled off shelters, some Fitters that were obtained from Iraq are stored. The southeast side has a large ramp and some hangars. The active flight line is probably there. Along the taxiway, some aprons with large shelters can also be found. The base is surrounded by barren land and farmland to the south and west. The north and east are bordered by roads, but most of the on base buildings are on that side as well, blocking your view.

Getting There

It can only reasonably be explored by car. It is about 50 km to the north of Hamadan town. Take the road to Tehran heading northeast. From a place called Famenin, you have to head northwest to Kabudar Ahang (also written as Kabud Rahang). Just before entering this town the base is on your left hand side.

Around the Airport

1East side approach runway 31L

The Hamadan-Kabudar Ahang road runs past the threshold of 31L. Any landing aircraft should be easy to spot. If you can get high enough to look over the earth wall, the ramp will be visible.

2Northwest side shelter area

Keep the base to your left, do not enter Kabudar Ahang but go left at the roundabout. This is probably towards Sardarabad and Gol Tapeh. Near the far north corner of the airfield the shelters will be visible. There is a taxi track running to and from this road, because it doubles as a highway strip further to the northwest. From the gate, you might just be able to see a nose or tail sticking out.
