General

Ghale Morghi is a training base situated in the southern outskirts of Tehran.

Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Iran!

Layout

The airfield has a very peculiar finger print. The runway runs east-west. There is a former runway that is now used as taxiway, running north-south with roughly the same length, and there is a taxi track running all the way around in a circle connecting the runway and taxiway thresholds to each other. To the left and right of the northern taxi track, and in the southeast corner, there are ramps. The southwest side only has a couple of dispersals along the taxi track.

Northeast side ramp - Air force

To the right of the northern taxi track, a large ramp can be found. It used to hold light aircraft, probably air force trainers, but this is now vacated and looks rather desolate.

Northwest side ramp - Revolutionary Guard

To the west of the north-south taxi track, there are two ramps. This is the revolutionary guard and police area.

Southeast side ramp - Army

In the southeast corner, there is a ramp with helicopters. This is the army part of the base.

Getting There

The airfield is 1.5 km from Tehran railway station, to the southwest. Also, it is just 5 km southeast of Mehrabad Intl, and 3 km north of the southern ring road. From Mehrabad, take Ayatollah Sa'idi and proceed on Ghazvin southeast. Make a right onto Mahboobeh Mohamedin, cross the rail way two times and then you will be on the north side of the airfield, turning onto Sa'idi again. Alternatively, get to the west ring road, follow that southbound, take the south ring road eastbound and take the exit northbound on to Tondgooyan. Then you will approach from the south. Lastly, from the south enter the south ring road westbound and take the same exit.

Around the Airport

1East side approach runway 27

Just east of the aifield there is a large park with a hospital and a mosque. This south side should offer leisurely close-up views of the approach.

2East side footbridge

Northeast of the threshold there is a footbridge over the highway connecting the aforementioned park with the residential area southwest of the railway station. There might be a chance to catch a glimpse of the southeast helicopter ramp that is about 0.75 km away.

3North side

Work on the north-south highway through Tehran progresses slowly. Currently, the over pass is ready but you can not enter it from all directions yet. While following the airfield perimiter clockwise, you can have a view at the northern ramps that seem deserted, there is even a wreck of a light civil looking aircraft. There is no wall in this corner and you can see the army complex from afar.

4West side approach runway 09 - Kooshan road

A small park at the crossraods between Kooshan and Ayatollah Sa'idi should enable you to watch the aircraft come in on runway 09.

5West side approach runway 09 - park

Further to the west than spot 5 you will find a bigger park, north of Ayatollah Sa'idi. This might be a bit less conspicuous. When the training aircraft do their circuits, a spot further from the airfield would also render some results.

6West side footbridge

The large footbridge in the south west corner of the airfield is probably the best spot. It offers views of the revolutionary guard and police helicopters on the northwest ramp. Obviously, you have to cope with the heavy traffic underneath you, the guard post in front of you and the locals using the bridge. In other words, it is a lucky shot to be able to point your bins. Go buy a can of red bull in the small convenient store just north of the bridge for some energy...
