General

Dov Hoz Airport, commonly known as Sde Dov, serves mainly for domestic flights to the north of the country, to Ein Yahav and to Eilat. The majority of international activities at Sde Dov take place in summer, by Arkia and Israir, for which Sde Dov serves as their home base. They fly to close by destinations but also do private flights, all departing from Terminal 2. Next to these airlines, Also El Rom Airlines and other airlines operate flight services, like pleasure flights over the country, air taxis and helicopter flights. At present, the airport also serves the military who have based some small propellor aircraft here. Sde Dov is located in the Dan Region, close to one of the northern suburbs of the city of Tel Aviv. In 1997, Sde Dov was declared an International Airport for private flights. There have been plans to close down the airport, seeing as it is located in a very central part of Tel Aviv, on rather expensive land. High apartment buildings are being build next to the airport.
The airport has an special arrangement for visitors. Specials groups wishing to arrange tours to the Visitors Center, can do so, at no cost. The route of the tour will be coordinated in advance according to the needs of the group. To arrange for a tour of Dov Hoz Airport, send a fax to 00-972-3-699-2766. Please state the desired date, the number of visitors and the age of the participants.

Layout

The airport's runway is located closest to the beach and runs along it. In the south there is a large taxiway running into the terminal. Around it are hangars for the military and aprons for the small civilian aircraft. Arkia and Israir are parked at the northerly apron.

Getting There

Getting to Sde Dov is quite easy by car. Just take Highway 20 also known as Ayalet North or Ayalet South. From Ayalet Highway North, exit on Keren Kayemet (K.K.L.) Boulevard, drive towards the beach and take the third left, Sderot Levi Eshkol road towards the airport. From Ayalet Highway South, exit on Sderot Rokah and continue. There are signpostings along the main roads.
The following bus lines stop at the airport: Dan bus no.26 (from Bat Yam via Jaffa), Dan bus no.29 (from the Central Bus Station), Egged bus no.89A (from Holon, only at limited times) and Egged bus no.192A (from Rishon Lezion, only at limited times). All buses travel along Derech Namir Road and stop at Seminar Hakibbutzim Teachers' College, just north of Sderot Rokah Road. From there, it is about a 7 minute walk to the airport.

Around the Airport

1View onto main apron

From the Ayalet South, driving onto Sderot Rokah, take a right onto Shai Agnon Road towards the reading power station. Take a right turn away from the power station and then the next left onto Sderot Levi Eshkol Road. From Ayalet North you are on this road already. You will see some apartment buildings which are higher than street level. Facing the aprons and terminal building, there is a small park between some apartment buildings. From here you will have a view onto the apron building. If you need binoculars, be quick not to offend the locals.

2Another view onto the aprons

On Sderot Levi Eshkol Road, there have built some roads for some future apartment buildings. On the west side of the road, there is a road into this construction area. Driving around, you will have a view onto the airport and its aprons.

3View with Northeasterly landings

Drive back from spot 1 and 2 to the crossing of Sderot Levi Eshkol Road and Shai Agnon Road. Take a right here, towards the Reading power station and again a right onto Nitsan Feldman Road. Park your car and walk further along this road along the perimeter of the power station, along the guarded entrance towards the power station towards the sea. For some evening views, walk onto the pier. During the day, find a spot near the parks on both sides of the river.

4Apron view

From spot 3 you can walk along the perimeter of the Reading power station, across a large bridge, along the perimeter of the airport on a cycling/walking road. From here good views can be had, especially in the evening.

5View from Boulevard

If you go south from spot 3, across the large bridge crossing the river, there is a nice boulevard with all kinds of restaurants and a park. From here you will have a good view onto all landing aircraft.

Coming in to land at runway 03, this A36 of the Hatzerim Base Flight has been captured from spot 3.
