General

Bergamo Orio al Serio airport is located 5km south of Bergamo. Although it is 55km east of Milan, it is still considered as the third airport of Milan and this is also how Ryanair advertises the airport. When looking at the distance between Malpensa and Milan versus the distance between Bergamo and Milan, it is only a small difference.
Apart from being close to Milan, it is also close to many important touristic attractions, such as the Alps, ski areas, lakes, etc. Hence since 2000, Orio al Serio has seen its annual number of passengers grow thanks to the expansion of Ryanair and other low-cost carriers. Finally, Orio al Serio is an important cargo airport in Italy, with DHL, Swiftair and MiniLiner as regular visitors.

Layout

The proximity of mountains more or less dictates the runway direction are Bergamo, which is nearly west-east. North of the main runway is a smaller runway for light aircraft, which park in the vicinity of that runway. The military facilities are on the northwest side of the airport, but there are only walls and buildings along the northern perimeter. The southwestern corner is for general aviation, going east followed by the main terminal and cargo aprons east of that.

Getting There

You can reach the airport by car by taking exit Seriate of the A4 motorway (Milan - Venice), and then follow signs for Orio al Serio Airport.
There are shuttle busses between Bergamo's train station and the airport, as well as to and from Milan central station. The latter is about every half hour with a journey time of an hour. From Bergamo’s bus station, shuttle buses run to the airport every 30 minutes (ATB line 1C). The journey takes about 10-15 minutes.

Around the Airport

1Car park

The roof of the car park west of the terminal offers a view over the apron and runway. This is also the spot you need to see the aircraft across the runway, on the military side, as there are walls and buildings blocking your view on that side of the airport. Being above street level means that you can photograph over the fence, but other obstacles like light poles, blast fences, airport equipment, etc. still hamper taking pictures. Lighting is good though for most of the day.
It is within walking distance of the terminal, and therefore suitable if you arrive by plane and have no car. If you want to avoid parking charges, you can also park the car in the free parking lot of the Orio Center shopping mall, which is opposite of the terminal south of the highway. There is a pedestrian underpass west of the parking lot to get to the other side of the highway.

2Touchdown 28

Spot 2 is a parking in an industrial area. Here the fence is very close to the taxiway and 50 mm shots of airliners can be made. Also you can take photos of aircraft touching down on runway 28. The only requirement is that you take a ladder or similar with you, as the fence has a very fine maze, making it impossible to photograph through the fence. Like for spot 1, the light is good all day, except during early morning in summers.

3Approach 28

If you continue the main road from spot 3, it will bring you to the approach of runway 28. Although not verified, it should be possible to take pictures of landing aircraft here. However, it is difficult to leave your car somewhere legally, so perhaps you should limit your stay and park next to the road.

4Runway 28 north side

For reading aircraft on the cargo ramp, at the main terminal and part of the military apron, you can go to this spot, which is close to the runway on the north side. Photography of aircraft should be possible over the fence, but you probably need to bring a ladder. Note that this spot has not been verified.

5Aeroclub

The aeroclub has its own (small) runway, and can almost be regarded as a separate airfield. The entrance road crosses the finals of runway 12, giving you the opportunity to take photos of light aircraft. You also have a good view on the aeroclub apron, but only limited and distant view on the main ramps and not at all on the military side. The aeroclub is signposted of the SS671 road.

6Approach 10

If spot 1 has not resulted in a complete log, you can always try this one, which is a small parking area next to a cemetery just north of the approach to runway 10. It gives you a complete view on the southern side and heat waves may hamper identification of the cargo aircraft parked in the distance. You may be able to take photos of landing aircraft, but the sun will result in backlight nearly all day.
Mind that spot 6 can only be approached from the Via Aeroporto, or via the village of Orio al Serio.

When you bring a ladder, nice close-up photos of taxiing aircraft can be made from spot 2. Here is B737 YR-BAG of Blue Air. (Vincent de Koning).
