General

Bracciano army air field is a small but very attractive airfield just 10km west of the city of Bracciano. The base consists of some medium sized hangars and has no runway. On base is the 1° Army Aviation Support Regiment which is responsible for maintenance on AB205, AB206 and A109 helicopters of the Aviazione dell' Esèrcito. Although the base is completely surrounded by walls, the surrounding hills provide some very nice views at the large amount of helicopters that are stored outside. In the past more than 50 could be seen at once. Since it is Italy, there is no guarantee that you will last very long if you start showing off your long telelens to passers by. Reading/watching is not a real problem.

Getting There

When coming from direction Rome and driving on the SS493/Via Braccianese Claudia, drive past the town of Bracciano and take the exit to the left towards Sambuco into the SP2B/Via Lazio. There is also a sign of the 1° Army Aviation Support Regiment at this junction. After 5km you will see the airfield on your right.

Around the Airport

1North-side

When coming from the North-East, take the turn to the right before reaching the airfield. This road is called Via del Casale delle Pietrische. Park your car along the road after some 800 meters and walk up the hill on your right. From here you have a good view on the stored helicopters. Because they are parked very close to each other, you will have to walk as high as possible to read them all.

2Main gate

At the main gate there is a SM1019E preserved, visible just behind the wall. Don't stay here too long, since you are very much in sight of the guards.

3South-side

When driving further on the SP2B/Via Lazio take the first road on your right when passing the airfield. From here you can see the stored helicopters from 500 meters away, but it can give you a better view on those you could not read from spot 1.

4On the hill

If you follwing the road from spot 3 you will drive up a hill that will lead you to a farmers house. From this road you can look inside the hangars whenever they are open. Also take a good look at the buildings and stored trucks and your right next to the main road (SP2B) since some A109s have been seen stored here.

At spot 3 you get an impression of what is outside. When walking up the hill in the back (spot 1) most codes and serials can be read. photo Melchior Timmers

When walking a bit further at spot 1, you will also walk up a hill and will see the helicopters from behind. photo Thijs van der Laaken.
