General

Frosinone is a very open and attractive airfield situated just 70km south east of Rome. Stationed here is 72°Stormo SVE that operates the NH500E. This unit is responsible for the training of helicopter pilots for the Aeronautica Militare, Aviazione dell' Esèrcito, Carabinieri, Polizia and Guardia di Finanza. The unit is also used for CSAR missions which are often flown together with HH-3Fs of 15°Stormo. Other user of Frosinone is AgustaWestland that has a major maintenance facility here. Most helicopters flown by Italian defence forces as well as helicopters of foreign air forces like Iran and Dubai can be seen outside here on week days. The base is good for reading and photography, but, since it is in Italy, there is no guarantee that you can stay very long if you start showing off your camera to passers by.

Getting There

To get to Frosinone, Follow the A1/Autostrada del Sole. Take the exit Frosinone and turn north into the SS156/Via dei Monti Lepini. After 2km turn left into Via Armando Fabi. From here the airfield is signposted. When you drive this road for 2.5km, you will see the base in front of you.

Around the Airport

1Main gate

When you reach the airbase, you will see the main gate in front of you. Here you can find a preserved OH-13.

2South side

When driving past the gate with the airfield at your right hand side, turn right into the Via Gorgoni. Although parking is difficult here, this is one of the spots to read the NH500s which are parked outside (if they are).

3West side

Drive a bit further on the Via Gorgoni and turn right into a small road which will lead towards Grotticile. This road follows the base perimeter and along the road are various places to stop to read helicopters outside the AgustaWestland facility as well as the based NH500s.

4North side

Keep following the road up north towards Grotticile and turn right into Via dei Salci. This road will lead past the north side of the airfield and from here you have an even better view at the AgustaWestland facility.
