General

The origins of the airport of Ghedi go back to the pioneers of the flight. In fact the city of Brescia can boast the paternity of the first "International Air kept Race" in september 1909. Some of the aces that participated in that occasion were Curtis, Calderara, Rougier and Leblanc. Atthe beginning of the First World war, the city of Brescia accommodated a military airport that was built close to Ghedi. 75° Gruppo had the assignment to defend the city since 1916. From then on the history of the airport of Ghedi has always been connected with the Italian Air Force and numerous Groups and Schools of Flight. In the fifties the base was renamed to Lieutenant Alfredo Fusco, owner of the Medal of Gold to the Military Valor. At the same time the air base was restructured in order to accommodate jets. At this moment the base houses 154° Gruppo with the Tornado IDS/IDT and some S-208s.

Layout

The airport has a northwest - southeast orientated runway with all the buildings to the east. There are some shelters to house the Tornados.

Getting There

The base is close to the city of Ghedi, south of the Dolomities and east of the city of Milan. It is located south of the A4 highway. In Brescia exit this highway and continue towards Montirone and then to Ghedi. Coming from the south, take the A21 towards Brescia, exit this highway near Menerbio and switch to the SP668 towards Ghedi.

Around the Airport

1Mid Position

The SP24 Via del Palazzo connects Montirone and Ghedi. Halfway, near an industrial area, take the Strada Borgosatollo the the north. After passing the railroad and a water reservoir the road makes a turn to the left. Park your car here and position yourself. This spot gives a view of the airport, while photographing is nice here it has be be done in the late afternoon due to the sun.

2Northerly Landings

Continue into Ghedi on the SP24 and at a large crossing go north onto the Strada Castenedolo/SP66. This road runs around the south part of the air base. However it is close to the fences and the meteo station. Just after crossing the railroad and before you approach this meteo station, there is a crossing with a dirt road to the right. Follow it towards an old ammunition area. Park your car at this area and walk to the approach for some nice landing shots. Depending on your position, you will need between 100mm and 200mm.

3View onto the Ramp

Follow the SP66 from Ghedi along the perimeter of the air base. After the wide right turn you should have a view onto the flight line.

4Southerly Landings

From spot 1, continue along the road to the north. Take the turn to the left onto the Via Pedrona. Park your car at the cobbles covered area at your left and position yourself for the landing here.

5Along the reservoir

From spot 1, take a the small road along the water reservoir to have another spot, maybe a bit more distant.

6Landing Shots Runway 31

Continue into Ghedi on the SP24 and at a large crossing go north onto the Strada Castenedolo/SP66. This road runs around the south part of the air base. At the bend, you can park your car and witness all landing aircraft.

Depending on type of aircraft, you will need between 150mm and 300mm at spot 1. ( Diego Crotti )

At spot 2 you are close to the aircraft and will need between 100mm and 200mm for some nice, low shots. ( Diego Crotti )
