General

Latina airbase is the home of 70°Stormo which consists of 207°Gruppo fying the SF260 Marchetti and 674ªSqColl which has a single MB339 on loan from 61°Stormo. The airbase is situated 10km north of the town of Latina, some 60km south of Rome. 207°Gruppo is responsible for the primary screening and training of new pilots for Italy's defence forces. For advanced multiple engine aircraft training, a single Piaggio P166 of the Guardia di Finanza is stationed here as well, although it is not officialy assigned to the airbase. The MB339 is used to keep the instructor pilots experienced in flying jet aircraft. On base there are several wrecks and relics of which most can be seen from outside. Despite Latina being surrounded by various other military airbases it is not much visited by non based aircraft. Currently the old SF260AMs are being replaced by new SF260EAs, but still some of them can be seen stored on the flightline. As you will experience with all Italian bases there is no guarantee that you will be able to stay as long as you would like, and also taking pictures is not always appreciated.

Getting There

Driving on the SP40

When driving on the SP40 from direction Rome, take the fourth exit on the roundabout in Borgo Piave to the "Strada della Chiesuola". After some 7km you have to take the third exit on the roudabout. You are now driving on the SS7 and after 500 meters the airbase is on your right hand side.

Driving on the A1/E45

When driving on the A1/E45 Autostrada del Sole from either Rome or Napels, take the exit at Frosinone (also worth a visit) in to SS156/Via dei Monti Lepini. Follow this road for the next 37km and turn right when entering the SS7. After 10km the airbase is on your right hand side.

Around the Airport

1Main gate

At the main gate there are some former based aircraft preserved behind the entrance. Although there is a big wall surrounding the gate, it is possible to see the T-6H and P166 on the right and the G-91Y in the back. When facing the gate and looking left you will be able to see the OH-13 from the rear, which is preserved between some buildings.

2Housing area

Although the housing area is officialy part of the base and surrounded by a fence, it is accesable by car for a short view on the flightline. If the grass is low, aircraft on the flightline can be read, except those in front of the hangar since you see them from the rear. On the left there are some old busses with a P-148 dumped between them.

3Via dell' Aereoporto

While following Via dell' Aereoporto you will find several spots to take a look at the flightlines. Officialy it is not aloud to stop the car on this road, so it is not advisable to stop for a long time.

4Heliport

At he heliport there is a small parking lot when you can park your car. From here you have a clear view on runway 30 and you will be able to read and photograph all aircraft from very close. You can walk along the road for more or less distance. At the heliport there is a small hangar with a single Agusta A109 of the 118 Ambulance emergency service.

5Runway 12

When runway 12 is in use, it is possible to take good pictures of landing aircraft. From the SS7, drive in to Strada Eschido and park your car along the road. Also it is possible to walk along this road for getting more or less distance for taking pictures.

From spot 2 it is easy to read the Marchetti's and to take pictures. Photo Melchior Timmers
