General

Pratica di Mare is Italy's largest military airbase and is situated just South-West of the capital Rome. The airbase is mainbase of the helicopters and aircraft of the Guardia di Finanza, Polizia and Carabinieri while the Italian Air Force 14°Stormo and 15°Stormo are based here as well. Biggest attraction to Pratica di Mare is 311°Gruppo/RSV, which is the test and evaluation squadron. Smallest unit based here is the Sezione Aerea MMI of the Italian Navy. The size of the airbase is also a problem when watching the aircraft from outside the fench. Big aircraft like the B707 and C-27/G222 are spotted easily, but most of the helicopters are not visible from outside. Other attractions are the large dump area and the big amount of preserved aircraft. As you will experience with all Italian bases there is no guarantee that you will be able to stay as long as you would like, and also taking pictures is not always appreciated.

Getting There

When driving on the ringroad of Rome, take exit 26 to the SS148 in direction Pomezia/Aprilia on the Via Pontina. After driving 17km take the exit to SP104B/Via di Pratica, the airbase is on your right after 7km.

Around the Airport

1Main gate

First spot to stop is the main gate where a single G-91PAN is preserved and is easily visible from the road. Taking a picture of it is not advisable since the maingate is in front it and the guards will most likely send you away.

2Guardia di Finanza

When coming from the SP104B/Via di Pratica, take the exit to Via Arno. When you follow this road you will drive past the hangars of the Guardia di Finanza, with the P180/ATR42 hangar situated close to the fence. Whenever the hangar is open or an aircraft is outside, a brief stop to read the serial or take a picture is possible, although officialy it is not aloud to stop on this road. When looking behind the hangar, the preserved NH500 is visible between some trees. Recently also some dumped NH500s were seen in a small compound behind the hangar, clearly visible from the road. When driving down the road you can try to stop to read aircraft whenever the traffic alouds you to.

3Runway 13

A bit further down the road you will pass runway 13 with a crash gate on your left 100m further. From here you can take pictures of aircraft landing and with a bit of luck you can read some aircraft outside the hangars of the Guardia di finanza.

4Old cinema

During recent visits, the old cinema was surrounded by a fence and not accesable. It is unknown if this is permanent or not.

5Runway 31

From the old cinema there are some small dusty roads towards the airbase, mostly used by farmers. When you drive on these roads you will come close to the fence and will have a better view, but remember that the guards also have a better view on you. When following these roads, they will lead you to pass runway 31, where you will have a good view on the end of the taxi track and the runway. If you are able to find a spot out if sight of the base, you will have great opportunities to watch the flying aircraft.

615°Stormo hangars

Coming from spot 5, drive back and take the first left and take another left at the end of this road. You are now driving on Via Campo Selva which will lead you to a farmers house. When looking left you will see the hangars of 15°Stormo and those of 14°Stormo at the end of the road. Look carefully between the hangars to spot operational and stored and preserved aircraft.

This G222 was taken at a point west of point 5, because of sunlight. (Ton v.d. Kleij)
