General

Viterbo airbase is situated just west of the town of Viterbo and along the SS204 highway. The airbase is split in a northern and a southern part by a public road. The northern part of the base is the biggest of the two and has two parallel runways, of which one is only used by the civil aero club. The southern part of the airbase is smaller but because of this, all aircraft outside can be spotted without much trouble. Viterbo is worth a visit in the weekends or other non flying days since many helicopters are outside, certainly on the northern part were some Chinooks are stored in the open. Like with all Italian bases there is no guarantee that you will be able to stay as long as you would like, and also taking pictures is not always appreciated..

Getting There

If you are driving on the SS204, take the exit Viterbo into the SS2/E550 towards the town centre. You will now drive on Via Cassia Nord. After 1400m take the first turn right into the SP2/Strada provinciale Tuscanese. This road splits the airbase in two.

Around the Airport

1The aero club

When driving on the SP2/Strada provinciale Tuscanese and just coming from the Via Cassia Nord, take the road straight on when the SP2/Strada provinciale Tuscanese turns left. You will also see a sign of the aero club here. This road, Strada Castaglione will lead you to the aero club on the north side of the airbase. When the aero club is open, you can park your car here and, with some good pair of binoculars, read the Chinooks and AB412s parked outside. On a good day some 20+ Chinooks are visible. Preserved in front of you is a G-91T/1 and if you walk a bit further towards the control tower, you might see a stationed AB412 of the 118 emergency services.

2Strada Castiglione

Now drive back from the aero club the same way you came on the Strada Castiglione. Along this road are various spots to stop to read the stored and operational Chinooks.

3North gate

Drive back to the SP2/Strada provinciale Tuscanese and follow this road for another 1,2km. Turn right here until you reach the gate. You must be able to see the preserved aircraft through the trees.

4South gate

After you spot the preserved aircraft at the north-gate, drive back to the SP2/Strada provinciale Tuscanese. After you turn right the south gate is on your left after 300 meters. Through the fences at the gate you can see gate guards and when you drive 150 meter further you will see the AB204 behind the wall.

5Crash gate

300 meters after the south-gate you see a road to the right, leading to some housing areas. Park your car on that road and walk back to the main road and cross it. If you look through the crash gate here, you will see some A129 Mangusta's whenever they are parked outside.

6Strada Valore

Drive further an take the next exit to the right. You are now driving on the Strada Valore. The airbase is on your right and you will fins several spots to stop to read the Do228s (big hangar most close to this road) and the AB412s and CH-47s.

7The Spa

Drive back to the main road, the SP2/Strada provinciale Tuscanese and cross it into the SP15/Strada delle Terme. After 500 meters turn left into the Strada del Bullicante. Follow this road for 400 meters and turn left into a small dusty road that will slightly go up a hill. Here is a hot spa where you can relax while watching the army helicopters. Since this spa is on a hill, you will have no problems reading the helicopters outside. Don't forget to walk a bit more to the right to spot some dumped and stored helicopters.
