General

A military air base and secondary airport until 1998, Gardermoen took over the role of Norway's main international airport from Fornebu. Located north east of Oslo, it is nowadays the second busiest airport in Scandinavia after Copenhagen. Gardermoen air station is located on the north side of the airfield and houses the transport fleet of the Royal Norwegian Air Force. Gardermoen has some great spotting possibilities and is well worth a visit.

Beware, photography at military installations is generally not allowed in Norway.

Layout

The airport has a distinctive H-shape, with the terminal located just south of the connector between both runways. Opened in 1998, the airport has already reached its capacity limit of 17 mln passengers per annum, and plans for a second terminal on the north side of the connector are currently being turned into reality. In the future, a third runway may be needed to handle the increasing numbers of passengers, despite the opening of two low cost airports in the Oslo area. The best views are obtained around the western one of both runways.

Getting There

Gardermoen may well be your airport of entry to Norway. If not, it is located at the end of road no.35, which doubles as highway E6, about 45 km north east of Oslo city centre. The airport is connected by a high speed railway, Flytoget, with the city centre, which takes about 19 minutes. Oslo Airport Station is located right under the terminal. Most cities in south eastern Norway are connected with railway links to the civil terminal.

Around the Airport

1Aprons - terminal area

The terminal area offers some great possibilities for spotting. The departures level of the main terminal building is served by an elevated road. From here, great pictures can be made on both sides of the terminal building. International flights usually depart on the east side of the terminal, and are best to graph in the afternoon. That said, domestic flights are served on the west side of the terminal, and pictures are best taken in the morning at this spot.

2Braathens apron - east side

Another good spot near the terminal is the second spot. After leaving the elevated ramp, take the first exit on your right, turn right at the intersection, straight ahead at the roundabout, followed by the first road on your left. This is the Braathens apron, which is often used for interesting visitors to park.

3Approach 01R - west side & taxiway

A bit further from the terminal, but still within walking distance is spot 3. Walk the road to the east side of the large parking lots, which is called Henrik Ibsensveg. You will have to cross two roundabouts, after the second one it is about 1300 metres to spot 3. This spot is good for viewing aircraft on finals for runway 01R, with photography at its best in the afternoon. Some earth mounds can be found here too, which allow for unobstructed viewing and graphing across the fence on the taxiway.

4Approach 01L - east side

Harder to find, but still within walking distance from the terminal is spot 4. From spot 2, take a right at the roundabout near spot 2, and follow this road to the south. It is called Edvard Griegsveg. Continue past the large parking lots on your left. After passing Nyvegen Gardermoen on your left, turn right and turn left at the T-junction. At the next T-junction, turn right and continue for about 200 metres. This spot is great in the morning for close-up shots of aircraft on short finals for runway 01L.

5Approach 01L - west side

In order to visit spot 5 till 9, we recommend taking a rental car or public transport. Buses 854 and 855 to Maura depart outside the terminal and make a few stops on the west side of runway 01L/19R. Spot 5 is just south of road no.35. A few side roads can be found here and all offer views of aircraft on finals for runway 01L. Some can only be reached driving in the southern direction though. Photography is best in the late afternoon.

6Aviation museum & runway 01L/19R - west side

The Norwegian Aviation Museum can be found at spot 6 and is well worth a visit. It is clearly signposted from road no.35. Opening hours are 10.00AM till 04.00PM on weekdays and 11.00AM till 05.00PM during the weekend. In Summer the museum is open from 10.00AM till 06.00PM and some weeks during Winter it may be closed. Entrance fee is 110 NOK. The lawn at the back of the museum is also worth a visit, as this is a good spot graph aircraft taking-off from runway 01L and landing on 19R. Photos are best made after noon.

7General aviation aprons - west side

Further north is Gardermoen's general aviation terminal. To the north and the south of the terminal, shots can be made both through and over the fence of the aircraft parked here. As you are on the west side of it all, the afternoon is best for photography here.

8SAS Museum & runway 01L/19R - west side

Just north of spot 7, the SAS Museum can be found, picturing the history of this Scandinavian airline. Opening hours are 10.00AM till 03.00PM on Tuesdays only and 11.00AM till 04.00PM on Sundays. The main attraction here is probably the tower, which is only open on Tuesday afternoon and provides great views of the western runway. However, just north of the museum, a wooden spotter platform has been build, which is open year around, seven days a week. It offers great views of aircraft using runway 01L/19R. Photography is best after your early lunch break.

9Approach 19R - west side

Not to be reached by public transport, but a rental car will pay-off at this spot. Continue north from spot 8 on Hans Gaardersveg, the road along the SAS Museum. After the next roundabout, turn right on the dirt road and right again at the T-junction. Only a few metres south a spotter's hill is located, which provides great views of aircraft approaching runway 19R. Actually, the entire runway can be viewed from here. This is probably the best of all spots listed here, all you need is the right runway to be in use. Photography is great here, particularly after noon.

10Runway 19L - east side & taxiways

For views of aircraft using runway 19L, spot 10 comes handy. From spot 9, drive around the north side of the airfield on road no.416, the white road on the map. After rounding threshold 19L, just before the wide curve, an earth mound can be found, which offers great views. Aircraft using one of the taxiways to threshold 19L, as well as aircraft on the runway can be seen from here. Moreover, aircraft parked near the terminal can be read off from here too, after a short walk along the fence to the south. As this spot is on the east side, pictures are best made in the morning hours.

11Landing 01R - east side

Another spot for the morning hours, spot 11 is opposite the SAS hangar, which is found west of runway 01R. From spot 10, you will have to hike through the woods to reach this spot, which consists of an earth mound again. Photography is great here of aircraft landing on runway 01R and to read off aircraft parked near the SAS hangar. Sound advice: do not go here by car, as fences can be shut behind you without warning...
