La Joya is the only fighter base in southern Peru and houses a squadron of Mirage 2000. As the base is constructed in flat desert land, it is literally found in the middle of nowhere, and viewings are scarce.
Beware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Peru.
Built by Cuban contractors, La Joya covers an enormous area and has an interesting lay-out. The runway is an impressive 13,000ft long and has a single parallel taxiway to its West side. Fighter sheds can be found near the 17 threshold only.
From Arequipa, just follow the Panamericana Sur highway (S1). After about 45 km, you will arrive at the large Panamericana junction, where you can go north and south on the Panamericana Sur. The right exit is going north, to La Joya village and Vitor air base, but we will keep going straight ahead to the south, where the air base is located. After another 15 km, you will arrive at the exit to Islay and Mollendo, and only after about 18 km south of this exit, you will find the railway line bordering La Joya air base. Do not be fooled, the village and the base are a mere 36 km apart.
No frequencies are known for this air base. |
