General

Callao, or Jorge Chavez International, is situated north of Lima near the coast line. At first glance it is a fairly straightforward airport with a single runway measuring 3500 metres. But the east side is cramped with ramps and hangars. All branches of the armed forces have units based here and many civil operators and maintenance centres can also be found here. Beware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Peru.

Layout

Most of the airport is surrounded by a perimeter wall. Also, many buildings and walls are on the airport behind and between the various areas as well, seriously hampering a clear view of all the nooks and crannies of this highly interesting airport.

For ease of reference we have divided the airport in three sections, north east, east and south east. On the map, the north east part is everything north of the first diagonal taxiway from the runway. The south east is everything south of the southern most diagonal taxiway from the runway. The remainder is the centre section which we refer to as 'east'.

North east ramps

The north east corner is occupied by FAP's 8 wing. Their maintenance hangars and ramps are bordered to the south by sister wing 3, the helicopter unit. Next up is a civil maintenance area, in between some stored aircraft of the air force are usually found.

East side

South of the first civil maintenance hall is the army area, followed by another large civil maintenance hangar. Most of the centre is dominated by the civil terminal though.

South east side

South of the terminal there is a small civil maintenance area and the general aviation terminal. Behind that, to the east and bordered by the main road and airport perimeter wall, is the police ramp. Another civil maintenance area follows. Next up is the coast guard ramp and near the southern threshold the navy hangars and ramps can be found. Lastly, some scrap areas are in the far south east corner of the airfield.

Getting There

Transferring to and from the city can be done by taxi. Do not take an official airport taxi though, but walk to the main road and take one of the many non-official ones. The prices should be about 10% of the official tourist rate. By car, the airport can be reached by following the signposts to the Panamericana. Do not take that highway itself. easiest will be to get onto the Avenida Morales Duarez which can be reached by taking the Avenida Ugarte north bound. Drive along the river on Duarez until you get to Elmer Faucett, make a right and the airport will be on the other side of the river.

Alternatively, follow Faucett from the start. This can be done from Avenida de la Marina. This in turn can be found running north west ward from Avenida Javier Prado Oeste/Este.

Around the Airport

1Terminal view

From the terminal taxiing aircraft can be watched. The two piers obstruct the view but some of the nearby maintenance ramps can be partly seen. The runway is too far for decent photography.

2East side police ramp view

Heading south along Elmer Faucett will lead you past the back of the walled off maintenance sites. The police gate offers a great open view of their ramp. Ask for permission and clear the ramp while waiting for it.

3South east side maintenance area

A bit further to the south of the police gate, you are able to view over and through the wall. Some of the coast guard and civil aircraft can be seen.

4South side approach runway 33

The southern approach is probably best seen from the small build up area in the south east corner of the airfield. However, this does not seem to be a place where it is safe to linger. Alternatively, find a spot on the other side of the river along Avenida Morales Duarez. Still not comfortable, but a bit further away from everything.

5North east side ramp view

When heading north from the terminal you will see the back sides of hangars and walls. At one spot, near the army gate, you can see some civil aircraft under maintenance on a ramp at the back of one of the hangars.

6North side approach runway 15

The Avenida Elmer Faucett bends to the north west. Aircraft that come in to land cross this busy road and although they are still a bit high, this seems a reasonable place to find a spot.

7West side FAP ramp view

After passing the threshold, you can go south on Avenida Coronel Nestor Gambaeta. Just after the soccer academy there are some farmland tracks. Beware of the locals, just walk to the fence, clear the ramps and get out of there. The northern most track is reasonable for the air force ramps and some of the civil stuff and army.

8West side army ramp view

Same story as spot 7, but this one offers a closer view of the army ramp. The terminal is a bit closer as well.
