General

Las Palmas is an important military airfield, situated in the southern part of Lima. The base is part of a huge military complex, which also houses army units, the military college, and an army aviation unit. The air force museum and Peru's premier aircraft overhaul facility can be found here as well.

Layout

The layout of the huge military complex is a bit complicated. The main gate of the air base is on Avenida Jorge Chavez. North of gate is the air force museum, to the south the SEMAN overhaul facility can be found, as well as the aerial photo service (SAN). The army aviation unit is located near threshold 01.

Getting There

The airport is located in the southern part of Lima, in Santiago de Surco. It can roughly be found between the Pacific Coast and the Panamericana Sur, Peru's main southern highway.

Around the Airport

1Museum & main gate

The impressive main gate of the air base is at the end of Av. Jorge Chavez. The gate is guarded by two aircraft, some museum aircraft are on display in the courtyard behind the main gate, in front of the main building. If you register beforehand, permission to visit the museum is usually granted.

2Main apron - south side

Peru's main aircraft overhaul facilities can be found on Av. Edmundo Aguilar Pastor. This road runs through the military compound and is walled on both sides, apart from a small housing area to its south, or your right side. Climb an apartment building and you will be able to see one of the preserved Mi-8. Near SEMAN's main gate, which on your left, glimpses can be had of the southern part of the main apron as well as the overhaul area. Many obscure corners prevent seeing everything at once. Here, your interest in geography comes handy. The aerial photography unit (SAN) is based here as well and welcomes visitors looking for maps of certain areas of Peru. Their building is right inside the gate and gives good views on the southern aprons.

3Museum aircraft & approach 19 - west side

Most museum aircraft are lined up in the northwest corner of the airfield on the northern part of the main apron. Driving around the airfield from spot 1, you will be able to see them if you peek across the wall at spot 3. Alternatively, this spot provides views on aircraft approach runway 19, and is good for photography at the end of the afternoon. You may want to visit the museum. Just register beforehand and you will usually be granted permission, whilst registering other aircraft present along the way.

4Army apron & approach 01 - west side

The southern threshold can be reached by driving around the military complex on the west side on Av. Panama and Paseo de la Republica. In this area, the second Mi-8 can be found, which may be visible from the adjacent shopping mall. To reach spot 4, take Av Metelini on your left and turn left again when you reach the fence and the road turn right. A paintball field is located right in the corner here. The area should be good for views of aircraft approaching runway 01, with photography best late in the afternoon, but not recommended. The army aviation unit is located here as well, so you may witness a helicopter over head.
