General

The airport of Pisco is located about 200 km south of Lima as the crow flies. The city is well known for its famous drink, pisco sour, and the bird and sea mammal colonies at Islas Ballestas. The airbase is home to a the training wing of the Peruvian air force, which moved here from Las Palmas. Work has started in 2010 to expand Pisco's civil airport, as it will become a (low-cost) alternative to Lima's Jorge Chavez airport. Therefore, the information in this airfield guide is likely to change in the near future.

Beware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Peru. Precaution is required at this military installation.

Layout

Pisco has a single 04/22 runway, with a taxiway to its west, along the full length of the runway. All facilities can be found on the west side of the runway. The civil terminal is located in the north west corner, the huge military aprons are covering the centre-west of the airport. Like most airfields in Peru, Pisco is surrounded by a wall.

Getting There

The airfield is located just east of the Pisco-Paracas road, and is bordering the southern suburbs of Pisco.

Around the Airport

1Gate & southern aprons

The military gate is located along the Pisco-Paracas road and is hard to miss. Apart from the two gate guards, aircraft parked on the southern part of the huge military apron can be seen from here as well. It takes some guts to aim your binoculars or camera at these, but as the sea shore is full of bird life, you will not be the first tourist seen aiming them near the base...

2Civil terminal & runway 04/22

The San Andres suburb is a dangerous neighbourhood, according to locals. That said, it is the only way to reach the civil terminal, so this might change with the upgrade of the airport's facilities. Take Calle Ica for the shortest way to the civil terminal. If allowed access, views on the runway can be had from here, as well as on the northern part of the military apron. Although a wall exists, if refused access, flying aircraft can be seen from here, but you probably do not want to stay longer in the area than strictly necessary.

3Approach 04 - west side

As said before, the shoreline is a safe place to linger around with a camera and/or magnifying equipment because of the great bird life here. Spot 3 is the place to be when runway 04 is in use. You can just lay on the beach and do your thing, you only have to face the road instead of the sea, but who cares. This spot is good for photography in the afternoon.

4Approach 04 - east side

If it makes you feel more comfortable to position yourself further from the base, or just because the circuit flying requires you to do so, you can move south along the main road. Spot 4 is also good for photography, particularly in the morning. Do not forget to bring your bird guide of Peru though!

5Approach 22 - west side

We have to mention spot 5, otherwise the independent travelers will try to find it themselves, but we can not recommend it. The southern suburbs of Pisco are considered dangerous grounds for western tourists and locals have advised repeatedly not to enter this area. If you choose not to follow the advise, spot 5 may be what you are looking for, if runway 22 is in use. In theory, photography should be doable from here, but only if you have checked your camera insurance before you decide to enter the zone.
